HEINTZMAN, John Sylvester, "long goodbye" ended peacefully with his family at his bedside on December 30, 2017. John was born to Philomena (Minnie) Streicher and Sylvester (Ike) Heintzman on September 4, 1925 in Louisville, KY. He attended St. Xavier High School and Speed Scientific School, graduating as an Electrical Engineer through the GI bill. He joined the US Navy in 1944 and saw combat in the Sea of Japan when he served as a Radar/Sonar Technician on the USS Sennet submarine. He later served in the Korean war on the USS Logan, and continued as a reservist for decades. He retired as a Captain in U.S. Intelligence and then enjoyed a long career with AT&T. He finally retired as Building and Equipment Engineer for the State of Kentucky. He married Margaret (Peggy) Kirkpatrick, the love of his life, in 1950. They had seven children: Kathleen (Philip) Morris, Teresa Heintzman, John C. Heintzman, Julie Heintzman, Alex (Anne) Heintzman, and Rebecca Heintzman; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous step grandchildren. John is survived by his two remaining sisters, Martha Young and Betty Kissel. John's greatest passion was his family and he never missed an opportunity to teach, advise, and mentor. Raising them was intricately woven with building things: their first Indiana home, the cabin retreat at Lake Nolin, toys as children, and homes, apartments and additions as his family grew. He also took great joy in nature through gardening, fishing and hunting. All who knew John, loved him. Everyone was met with his warm smile and treated with respect. He was kind, compassionate, and wise; a true gentleman by every measure. A man of dedication and grace, he was our rock. The visitation will be at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road Thursday from 4-7:30 p.m., followed by Mass at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3345 Lexington Road, Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Kosair Charities, Olmstead Parks Conservancy or to Hosparus. Online condolences may be left at www.ratterman.com.
