At random: Traditionally, United States submarines have been named after fish and other marine creatures. One exception was the Navy's first submarine HOLLAND which was named after its inventor, John Philip Holland. Today, ballistic missile submarines are named for famous American patriots, with the newest class, the OHIO class, named after states. The LOS ANGELES class of attack submarines are named for United States cities. The nations news class of submarine, the Virginia class, is also named for US States, making them the capital ships of the navy.

Can't remember if I've ever posted here before, but I have been reading for many years.

I am at 45 years. Qualified 20 December 1972 aboard Gudgeon coming home from Westpac. I am close enough to 50 that a little taste is beginning to form in my mouth. I just hope I can make it the last nine yards. Congrats shipmate on a milestone.

Just passed my 50 last Aug. Thought I'd never live that long and almost didn't.

Running around half naked in a hula skirt and coconut bra, small wonder you almost didn't make it.

NO. Heart attack and then a stint. Then a bleeding ulcer and heart attack. Ulcer surgery. Another heart attack and then bypass surgery. Dancing had nothing to do with it. The grass skirt and coconuts were 17 years ago.

Never understood the big deal with the Holland Club award.  Should be called the "50 years of suckin' air" award.  Only in America can you get an award for breathing

Same here.  I was presented with one 4 years ago at our annual Christmas Luncheon and have not worn it.  I'm not sure I can explain why I don't without offending someone.

It's just "me".

If a bunch of crazy, carousing, ocean hole punchers who all joined the same club, want to throw a party to celebrate a wonderfully important event in an fellow aging subboaters life.....so be it!
