CRAMER, Robert W., 92, of North Beach Haven, NJ, passed away peacefully on Jan. 5, 2018, while being cared for at Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, NJ. A World War II veteran, Robert enlisted in the Navy and was selected to join the submarine service. He served aboard the school boat USS O-3 (SS-64) in New London 5/1/1944 to 8/1/1945, and aboard USS Charr (SS-328) in Pearl Harbor from 10/27/45 1945 to 4/17/1946. A natural born salesman, Robert served as a territorial sales manager for The Otis Elevator Company as well as Atlas Screw & Specialty Co., retiring in 1988. A man of the community, and resident of Montgomery Township, NJ, for over 30 years, Robert supported such organizations as The Boy Scouts of America. As a coach, umpire, and manager, he enjoyed his time with the local youth basketball program. He was a charter member of The Dunellen Blue Streak Sports Athletic Club, as well as The Little Lads and Lassie Basketball Organization, which was later adopted by The Montgomery Township Recreation Committee. Serving as an assistant director, Robert helped with the Annual Montgomery Day in May Program. He served as director of Central Jersey Civil Defense. Robert also volunteered his time at the Old & New Shop for Southern Ocean County Hospital. A proud veteran, Robert was a lifelong member of The Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 35, Manahawkin, NJ, and was a life member of Submarine Veterans WWII, Gudgeon Chapter, and a life member of US Submarine Veterans, Inc. A man of faith, Robert served on the board of governors for the Spray Beach Chapel and was a past deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Tuckerton, NJ. A member of the Spray Beach Yacht Club, Robert also proudly served as commodore in 1998. He was married to the love of his life, Nancy Schmeyer, in 1949, and had four children: three sons and a daughter. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Florence and Austin L. Cramer of Dunellen, NJ; brother, Austin B. Cramer of Virginia; son, Jeffrey T. Cramer (Amy) of Bedminster, NJ, and granddaughter, Kaitlyn E. Cramer of Hanover, VA. He is survived by his wife of 68 years; daughter, Nancy K. Miller (Robert) of Hopewell, NJ; son, Col. Robert A. Cramer (Beverly) of Ringoes, NJ; son, Daniel W. Cramer (Susan) of Hanover, VA; 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Tuckerton, 210 East Main St., Tuckerton, NJ 08087. McCARTY, Robert C. passed peacefully in his sleep on 12/18/2017. He was born in the Waco Hospital to Mr & Mrs. G.C. McCarty on 1/15/1928, and raised in McDade and Yokum,TX. After graduating Yokum High School in '45 he enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18. He completed submarine training at the base in New London, CT, received special training, and was part of a submarine task unit that participated in a "secrecy veiled" voyage aboard the USS Boarfish under the polar ice cap off the Siberian coast. After receiving his discharge papers he attended The University of Texas on the GI Bill. He earned a degree of BFA in '52 majoring in Commercial Advertizing. He began his career with the Texas Highway Department and enlisted as a reservist with the Army. At the Highway Department he was a graphic artist for the mapping division and became integral in producing the Texas highway map. And was creator of the famed,"Litter Critter", the mascot for the,"Stamp Out Litter", campaign that received recognition. With the reserves he retired CWO4 and was awarded meritorious service. A member of the Scottish Rite and a Texas Freemason. Robert is survived by the love of his life, whom he married in '49, Melba Lois McCarty, three children and in-law raised in Austin, Roxanne Kline and husband Dan, Robin Stathos, and Robert R. McCarty. Four grandchildren Brad Kline and wife Morgan,Traci Kline, Jason Stathos, and Ryan Stathos and wife Jessica. And great grandchildren Emily, Evelyn, Forrest, Kathryn, Witten, Connolly and one on the way. "RC" was a good man, a good father and he loved his family. Farewell Dad, we love you. BERMEA, Jose, a resident of Avon for 31 years, passed away suddenly at Boston Medical Center on January 2, 2018. Beloved husband for 29 years of Diane (Nye) Bermea; father of Evelyn Nye and husband Phil Martin of Avon, Cathleen Giordano and husband Anthony of Milton, and John Nye and wife Leah of Avon; grandfather of Melissa McDonald and husband Phil Howley of Avon, Samantha and Nicolena Giordano of Boston, and Amanda Nye of Avon; great-grandfather of Joshua Harris of Avon. Son of the late Pablo and Jesusa Bermea; brother of Barbara and Juanita and the late Ramon, Samuel, Raphael, Oscar, Esther, and Elodia. Joe served in the US Navy submarine service on the USS Nautilus. He also served in the 82nd Airborne serving 2 terms in the Vietman War, earning several medals including the Purple Heart. He had most recently worked for Allied Security Services. Joe enjoyed watching the Patriots, Red Sox, and old movies. Most of all, Joe enjoyed spending time with his family. LYONS, Phillip Lynn, 92, was born on July 22, 1925 and passed away on Monday, January 1, 2018. Phillip was a resident of Montana at the time of passing. He attended Madison Grade School and Butte High School before going into the Navy in 1943 at 17 years old. His Navy career saw Herk serve aboard the submarine USS Pintado (SS-387) for "war patrols" 2-3-4-5-6, which resulted in the sinking of a dozen or more enemy ships and rescued 12 B-52 Airmen who had been shot down off the coast of Japan. He also served as secretary of the Masonic Blue Lodge and was a member of the Elks in Butte.


BURTON, Lee William, 94, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 5, 2018. He was born on May 18, 1923 in Floyd County, Texas to Clyde Wilson and Beulah May (Orsburn) Burton. Lee graduated from Floydada High School and served in World War II aboard the submarine USS Cod. He married the late Nina Theresa Myrick in 1944, she died in 1976. He married Margaret McKinney Rodgers in 1993. He farmed in Floyd County many years before retirement. Lee met the challenges of farming creatively by making some of his equipment, by being his own mechanic, electrician, plumber, and welder. He was always willing to help a neighbor. He was a member of Lubbock Lifepoint Baptist Church, American Legion, Sons of the American Revolution, the Farm Bureau, the Lubbock Open Heart Club, and the Lubbock Woodworker's Club. Lee made hundreds of wooden toy cars for Toys for Tots. Mr. Burton was preceded in death by his first wife, Nina; two daughters, Carolyn Theresa Burton and Phyllis Ann Burton; one son, Richard Lee Burton; and two sisters, Maurice Burton and Viola Burton Greene and husband Randy; and infant brother, Hugh Orsburn Burton, remembered. He is survived by his wife Margaret; daughter, Sharon Pattillo and husband Don; grandson, Ron Pattillo; and sister-in-law, Marjorie Myrick. Lee's family wishes to express sincere thanks and appreciation for the excellent care provided by Wilshire on 4th assisted Living and Lubbock Interim Hospice. CONRAD, Peter Corteau 88, died in Leonardtown, Maryland December 10, 2017. He was born June 12, 1929. He was predeceased by his dear wife Judith Coville Conrad and by his younger twin siblings Julia Conrad Byrne and John (Jack) Conrad. Pete is survived by brother Charles C. Conrad and three children and their spouses, Emilie C. Griffin (Frank), Paul F. Conrad (Theresa) and Kathleen C. Spooner (Tom); and by six grandchildren and two grandsons in-law, Casey and Erin Griffin, Tory (Carl Bauer), Christina (Francis Czerner), Allie and Phoebe Conrad. Pete was raised in Arlington, Virginia. He attended Western High School in Washington, DC and Bullis Preparatory School prior to entering the United States Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1953. His Naval career spanned 37 years from plebe year at the Academy to retirement as a Rear Admiral in 1986. He was commanding officer of the diesel electric submarine USS Gudgeon (SS-567), destroyer escort USS Robert L. Wilson (DDE-847), Pearl Harbor Naval Station and Cruiser-Destroyer Group TWELVE. His final posting was Deputy Comptroller of the Navy. After retiring from the Navy, Pete spent ten years as President of the Navy Mutual Aid Association. He served on the board of directors for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and chaired its Finance Committee. He also served as a Trustee of the United States Naval Academy Foundation. In 1996 Pete and Judy moved to their home on the Potomac River in Leonardtown, MD. They were active in Leonardtown and St. Mary's County communities, Judy with the North End Gallery and Pete with Our Lady's Church, his golfing buddies and with his brother Charles supporting nephews Peter and Gerald Byrne's vision of starting and developing what is now a thriving wine grape vineyard at the family farm in Charlotte Hall, MD. Growing wine grapes led to Pete being a founding member of the St. Mary's County Wine Growers Cooperative and in establishing the Port of Leonardtown Winery. Pete was a devout Catholic with a deep and abiding faith in God. He took great strength over the years from his faith and involvement with the Church and Catholic community. He was supportive and generous to friends, the Catholic church, the Naval Academy and charities that served those most in need. Keenly and genuinely interested in people, Pete developed true and lasting friendships throughout his life. His friends describe him as a mentor, leader, patriot, loyal and dedicated friend. He will be missed by all for being a dedicated husband and father, a good friend, a genuine person and a generous man with a playful sense of humor and clever wit. A Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 22800 Washington Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650. RODEN, Arthur Albert, Jr., 93, of Lecanto, FL died on December 23, 2017 at Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala. Arthur was born on December 15, 1924 in New York, NY, son of Arthur and Lillian Rodenberg. He was a US Army and US Navy veteran. He served in the submarine service during World War II in the Pacific Theater [R-14, Scamp, CSD-61, Trout, Cobia, CSD-121, Hammerhead]. Arthur was vice president for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. Mr. Roden was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Roden in 2016. Survivors include his brother, James Roden, his nephew, Father Raymond Roden of New York City and his niece Patricia Clements of Yarmouth, ME. VAN HOFF, William Joseph, 94, of Midland, TX passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2017 in San Antonio. Joe was born on October 4, 1923 to Paul Anthony and Mary Martin Van Hoff of El Paso, Texas. He lived in El Paso through his graduation from Austin High School. He then volunteered for the United States Navy during World War II and for submarine duty aboard the USS Threadfin SS-410), from 1944 to 1945. While a sailor, he met the love of his life, Marilyn Eileen Libby, at a dance at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire and married her on June 11, 1946. They then moved to El Paso where he graduated from Texas Western College as a geologist. He and Marilyn had 71 amazing years together, had seven children, and lived in El Paso, Houston, Odessa, Midland, Oklahoma City, and Denver, making life-long friends wherever they went. Joe's life was centered around family. There were family trips and vacations such as to visit cousins in New Mexico, fishing in area lakes, White Sands, Cloudcroft, The Painted Desert, Grand Canyon, and New Hampshire. Along the way, he would explain in detail all the various rock formations and their history. There was also a trip to Holland to meet with his Dutch relatives. Because he was a geologist, he enjoyed taking his children to oil well sites as an educational enrichment. He was an accomplished bowler, continuing well into his 80s. His woodworking projects were a delight to all who received some of his creations. He played bridge with friends and was a true die-hard Cubs fan! He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; his parents, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Wesley and Jeannette Libby; his sister-in-law, Nancy Libby Lemire and husband Eddie; his brother-in-law, Wesley Jordan Libby, Jr.; grandson, Matthew James Buss; and his son-in-law, James Michael Zavatson. VENTURA, Fred Ramos, 92, of Groton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at home. He was born on Aug. 20, 1925, in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, Philippines, the son of Leodigario and Rufina Ventura. Fred served 35 years in the U.S. Navy (1945 to 1972) as a submariner during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Era. The USS Stonewall Jackson (SSBN 634) was the last vessel served on. He also received several awards and recognitions, the last on Oct. 8, 2008 from the Office of the Secretary of the State of Connecticut – from Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz In Recognition of his public service award as a token of his patriotism and sacrifice during the Second World War. He met and married Verna Camero Ventura on March 3, 1952. His early Navy career was spent in Hawaii. The family moved to Groton where he settled and retired. He was an avid bowler up to his 90s and was a member of USBC bowling. Fred enjoyed gardening, playing poker cards, karaoke, played the trumpet and the guitar. He is survived by his wife, Verna Camero Ventura; his children, Fred R. Ventura Jr. (Elizabeth), Yolanda Upholz (John), Rodrick Ventura (Regina), Vernon Ventura (Sue), Robert Ventura (Maggie), James Ventura (Maria), Loreen Panucci (Robert), Daniel Ventura (Tomoko), Clarence Ventura (Karen), Alicia Lundy (John), and Sandra Avery (Larry); 22 grandchildren, Michelle, Jamie Ann, Rodrick Jr., April, Yos**taka, Steven, Joycelyn, Christina, Seth, Cassandra, Jason, Alicia, Veronica, Renee, Jerilyn, Vincent, James, Nicholas, Robert Jr., David, Jonathan, Lana; and eight great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Ella Mae, Amiliana, Sophia, Anneilse, Kai, Keanu and Nalani; and his brother, Eduardo Ventura (Norma); and many nieces and nephews. LEWIS, John "Pops", 88, of Liverpool, passed away Thursday January 4, 2018 at Iroquois Nursing Home. Pops was born in Syracuse and had lived in Liverpool for over 55 years. He retired from Greyhound Bus Lines in 1986 where he drove bus for 34 years. During that time he also worked for the Liverpool Central School District as a Bus Driver for many years until retiring in 1993. He was a communicant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, served as an Usher and was a member of the church choir for many years. He was a US Navy veteran, Seaman First Class, where he served on a submarine as a medic post WW II. Pops was very active in his community. In 1964 he joined the Liverpool Fire Department where he served for over 53 years. During that time he held fire line positions, Executive Board positions serving as President in 1983 and he held the office of Fire Police Captain for 10 years before taking his retired life status. He had a great love for the fire department and it's members. He participated in just about any function that the department had, from softball leagues, fund raisers and parades where he served as chairman for many years. You would see him driving the department's 1940 Dodge antique fire truck in all the parades. One of his other great joys was playing Santa at many of the winter functions throughout the community. Pops was a devoted , loving and caring family man at home and throughout the community. He will be remembered for his fun loving and great sense of humor. He was predeceased by his parents; Richard H. and Frances Lewis, Sr., and Althea and Dewey Painter; his siblings Richard Jr., Beverly Pierce and Patricia Lewis. Survivors include his loving Wife of 69 years the former Shirley J.
