Buffalo, NY - home to the original USS Little Rock at the military park.

Possibly this is why the commissioning was held in Buffalo?

Visited the Military Park in Buffalo back in 1998 and toured the USS Little Rock, USS The Sullivan's and USS Croaker and thoroughly enjoyed the day spent there. The St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes are notorious for their iced up conditions at this time of year, so why risk a brand new multi-million dollar warship being hemmed in by ice for a couple of months? Apart from the commissioning ceremony aspect it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I AUG 61 they put us on a ferry NYC to NJ, then overnight train to CHICAGO.  Long wait there, then bus ride to GLakes arriving in the dark with cat calls from the recruit barracks in Camp Barry.  There they had orientation & opened the galley to feed us.
