TRUMAN, John, 73, died peacefully, with his wife and children by his side, on March 23, 2018 in Surprise, Arizona. John was born on June 1, 1944 in Seattle, Washington to Jack and Catherine Truman. He married Mary on August 24, 1968. He served eight years in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service. Following his time in the Navy, John owned and operated a Maintenance company for eight years. He began working for General Dynamics, Electric Boat in 1980, as a Logistics Analyst, retiring in 2010. John was first and foremost a family man. Family and friends remember him as a kind, selfless person always the first to volunteer his time and energy. He was an active and dedicated member of the Groton chapter of the US SubVets and a lifetime member of the Holland Club. John is survived by his wife, Mary Cronin Truman, his son Christopher John Truman (Maureen Ward Truman) grandson, Brendan, and granddaughter, Colleen, of Vernon, CT; and his son Joseph John Truman (Corina Card Truman), of Norwich, CT. John is also survived by his three sisters, Patricia Boyd, of Lynnwood, WA; Mary O'Brien, of Mukilteo, WA; and Diane Hayes, of Renton, WA. A service will be scheduled at a later date. BERCHEM, Frederick Ronald (Hamish) BA, MA, CD, AdeC After a good innings and although "packed and ready to depart but not peppering to do so," Hamish passed away suddenly in Mexico, by the sea, a place he loved and visited annually with his wife, Pat. Predeceased by his wife of 50 years Patricia and his sons, Anthony (Cheryl) and Alan. Survived and greatly missed by his daughters Fiona (Grant) and Isabel (Alan), his grandchildren (Natalie, Scott, Katrina, Megan, Jenna, Alexandra and Miranda), his brother Ian, sister-in-law Anne (Alan) and his nieces and nephews. Born in Scotland, Hamish was a submariner with the Royal Navy before transferring to the Royal Canadian Navy. He was Commanding Officer, HMCS York, 1970-1973. He held an Honours BA and MA in History and English from the University of Toronto and taught High School at Don Mills and Bathurst Heights Collegiate in North York. He later worked for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Burlington, Ontario before retiring. In retirement, he continued his love of writing and painting, becoming a member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists (CSMA) and spending time in Picton and Halifax. He was as well-known for his personal Christmas card artwork as his anecdotes. He enjoyed time spent with family and friends from coast to coast, sharing memories and laughter. His memory will live on through his published works, illustrations, paintings and writings. The funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at 1300 hours at Timothy Eaton Memorial United Church, 230 St. Clair Ave W. Toronto. NEWTON, Donald Allison, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Don was born in Waynesboro PA on November 17, 1931. Orphaned at age 8, he resided at and graduated from the Milton Hershey School in Pennsylvania, where he learned his strong work ethic. Subsequent to high school, Don developed his keen sense of adventure through four years of active duty service on a US Navy submarine. Following military service, he received a Bachelor's Degree and became a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at American University. He met and married his first wife, Patti Sheller Newton, remaining in the DC area and working as an insurance agent for 41 years. Don was an avid volunteer serving on the Board of The Pathways Schools, and as a long-time Trustee and Elder of Northwood Presbyterian Church. Don enjoyed meeting new people, traveling, reading, dancing and playing golf. He was always fun to be around. If you met him once, he made a lasting impression on you. Don leaves behind his wife, Betty of 32 years; beloved son, Clarke Allison Newton (Sandy); step-children, Jim Brackman, Vicki Kane and Karen Mullikin (Robert); and 10 grandchildren, Calvin Kane, Lucas Kane, Samantha Mullikin, Francesca Newton, Sarah Mullikin, Elana Brackman, Melissa Kane, Mason Newton, Kendall Newton and Kai Brackman. Don donated his body to the Anatomy Board of Maryland for medical education and research. A celebration of his life is planned for early June. Condolences can be sent to his family. SCOGGINS Roger Dale, 64 passed away March 26, 2018. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Stanton at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 29, 2018. Roger was born on March 15, 1954 to Calvin and Shirley Presley Scoggins in Stanton, Texas. He served in the US Navy from 1973 to 1983 then working as an electrician after his discharge from the service. He enjoyed playing Golf, helping the elderly, and attending submarine conventions. He is survived by his mother, Shirley Scoggins; his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Henry Webb, his brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Lois Scoggins; nephews, Phillip and wife, Nicki and their daughter, Jaiden, Kyle Beckman and daughter, Rheonna, Jimmy Beckman and wife, Angie and their daughters, Emma, Sage, Sydney; niece, Stephanie and her son, Nickoli and daughter, Zoe; grandsons, Trey Barger, Jaime Toliver, and Jenny Cheek; great-grandson, Tanner Barger; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Roger is preceded in death by his father, Calvin Scoggins and his grandson, Tanner Barger. The family would like to express their gratitude towards the Class of 1972 of Stanton High School, Audrey Brown, Chipper and Jo Coggin, Bubba Standefer, Carla Hill, Jackie Swanson, Lyn Porter, Barbara and Earl Dickenson, Hicham and Jackie, and Bobbie Henson.
