At random: The first Japanese prisoner of war captured by the Americans was Kazuo Sakamaki, an ensign in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He was captured on the morning of December 7, 1941. Sakamaki had set an explosive charge to destroy his disabled submarine, which had been trapped on Waimanalo Beach. When the explosives failed to go off, he swam to the bottom of the submarine to investigate the cause of the failure and became unconscious due to a lack of oxygen. Sakamaki was found by a Hawaiian soldier, David Akui, and was taken into military custody. When he awoke, he found himself in a hospital under American armed guard. After the war he returned to Japan and found work with the Toyota Motor Corporation before retiring in 1987. Sakamaki died on November 29, 1999, aged 81.

Atlantic 04/24/60: The USS Triton (SSN-586) suffers a serious casualty in the after torpedo room when a hydraulic line to the stern plane mechanism bursts just prior to the end of its global circumnavigation. Quick action by crew members prevents the accident from getting out of control. The leak is stopped and hydraulic power is restored.

Atlantic 04/24/88: The USS Bonefish (SS-582) suffers explosions and fire in its battery compartment during operations with the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) and the USS Carr (FFG-52) in the Caribbean, killing three. Submarine experts say that the most likely cause was the accumulation of hydrogen gas while the batteries were being recharged, which probably was ignited by a spark.

Right after The Bonefish fire I met the officer who was going through PCO school to become the new Bonefish skipper. I think he went elsewhere.
