At random: ENS Sam Hunter, the first submarine casualty of WWII on Dec. 8, 1941. He was attached to Sea Dragon moored next to Sealion. He was killed by shrapnel from the first bomb hit on Sealion penetrating the conning tower of Sea Dragon. The second hit killed 4 men in Sealions Engineroom.

PELLEGRINI, Richard A., 85, passed away on Friday, April 20th, 2018. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Sharon Pellegrini (nee Terlep); their children, Mark (Sue) Pellegrini, Julie (James) Gosselin, Victoria (Juan) Ortiz; his step daughter, Debbie (Esequiel) Gallardo; grandchildren, Matthew, Nicholas, and Adam Pellegrini, Annie and Ellie Gosselin, Jennifer Montano, James Hoffman, Maria Gallardo, and Christina Urbalejo; sister, Janet Wolfinbarger; and sister-in-law, Geraldine Pellegrini. Preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Catherine (nee Frantini) Pellegrini; his brothers, Kenneth Pellegrini and John (the late Nancy) Pellegrini. Richard graduated from Joliet Catholic High School Class of 1950. He attended Purdue University on a football scholarship where he was a member of the freshman football team. Richard then attended Quincy College for 1 year before enlisting in the United States Navy. He entered active duty in May of 1952 after completing his training at Great Lakes Naval base and was assigned to the USS Quillback (SS-424), Submarine Division, in Key West Florida. Richard's recognitions include the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After his service, Richard became a Joliet firefighter for 27 years until he retired in 1985. He also worked as a cement finisher and was a member of the American Legion Joliet Post #1080. Richard had an endless love for his family and commitment to his faith. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan. He enjoyed antiquing and spending time with his family, especially when it came to taking family vacations. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Salvation Army. A celebration of Richard's life will begin on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 11:00 AM with a Memorial Prayer Service at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home Chapel, A1 Auditorium, 1201 Wyoming Ave, Joliet, IL 60435. SEABO, Joseph Frank, Sr., 79, of Wagener, South Carolina died Wednesday April 11, 2018. Mr. Seabo was raised in Paulsboro and graduated from Paulsboro High School Class of 1955. He was a veteran serving in the United States Navy aboard submarines. Mr. Seabo retired from Mobil Oil Company after 23 years as a supervisor and then worked at Paulsboro High School for several more years. He was a past member of Paulsboro Volunteer Fire Association and Clarksboro Lodge #87, F. & A.M. Joseph was always willing to help people, but never asked for help. His last home was his biggest accomplishment, pride and glory. He was also a proud world class bulldog breeder (Charjo Bulldogs). He is survived by his wife, Charlene Seabo (nee O'Hara) of Wagener, SC; his children, Joseph F. Jr. and Christine Seabo of Sewell, Gretchen Ann and Edward Matlock of Billingsport; 7 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild and a host of family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM Saturday May 5, 2018 in the McBride - Foley Funeral Home, 228 W. Broad St., Paulsboro. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Saturday morning after 10 AM until service time. BALL, John Coming, Jr., 95, The Reverend Canon Ball, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Helen "Nell" Jervey Ingle Ball, died Thursday, April 26, 2018. John was born April 26, 1923 in Summerville, South Carolina, the son of the late John Coming Ball and Anne Arden Jervey Ball. He attended prep school at St. Andrews Episcopal in Delaware. John received both his BS in Chemistry in 1946 and Theological Education at the University of the South, Sewanee in 1958. He served as a first lieutenant aboard the submariner USS Blackfin (SS-322) in the U.S. Navy during WWII; worked for Hercules Powder Co./Dupont and then married in 1953. John served as an Episcopal Priest beginning at Christ Church, Denmark, SC, from 1958-1961 then served in the Diocese of Atlanta at St. Anne's from 1961-1976, in San Antonio, Texas at St. Mark's Episcopal from 1976-1979 returning in 1979 to South Carolina to serve as Vicar to the following parishes of Holy Apostles in Barnwell, St Alban's in Blackville & Christ Church in Denmark. In 1985 he was called to St. Philip's in Charleston and soon after was called to the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul as interim Dean from 1987-1989 and was appointed Canon Pastor for the Diocese by Bishop Allison. John was very involved in Cursillo in both the Diocese of South Carolina and Texas. He served on the Board for Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community for several years and in 2000 moved there with Nell. John continued to serve as Canon Ball until 2007 when Nell became ill. He was lovingly taken care of in skilled nursing at Bishop Gadsden his last two years. It was noted that John's gift of pastoral care was widely known in Charleston's many hospitals and nursing homes. John is survived by two daughters: Helen "Nell" Ball Brennan (Robbie) of Columbia and Sarah "Sally" Ball Damewood (Greg) of Charleston; a brother, Edward Robbins Ball of Mt. Pleasant; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Ball; and two daughters: Charlotte Ball Vogelsang (Chris) and Caroline Ball Hawkey (Blake). Two services will be held: A memorial service will be held Friday, May 4, 2018 in The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way at 4:00 p.m. and a Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, May 8, 2018 in The Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul, 120 Coming Street at 3:00 p.m. Interment to follow in the Cathedral Churchyard. WUEBKER, Gilbert Smith, 93, passed away in Sacramento on April 30, 2018.was born in Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY in April 1925 to Carl Ludwig Wuebker and Laura Smith Wuebker. At age 16 he attended Kenyon College in Ohio prior to joining the United States Navy in 1942 at age 17 to fight World War II. He trained in College of the Ozarks as a Navy engineer then was stationed at Treasure Island in San Francisco, California. He fell in love with the San Francisco Bay Area and always knew he wanted to return here. Gil served as a submariner in the Pacific in CSD-321, CSD-322, CSD-202, and on the USS Bang (SS-385) through the end of the war. After the war, he bought a gas station in Schenectady. He was introduced to and fell head over heels in love with Palma Salerno, a young lady who lived across the street from the gas station. Gil married Pam on February 29, 1952. He joined American Locomotive Company and was promoted to management just before the workers went on strike. The strike eventually caused the company to go bankrupt, so Gil joined IBM where he worked in engineering and management for 37 years. In 1960 Gil was assigned to IBM Japan for 4 years. He lived in Yokahama and in the Sagamihara area with his family until returning to the States in 1964 and moving to Atlanta. In 1982 he accepted a job with IBM in the Disk Storage Unit in San Jose and was delighted to return to the Bay Area. Gil is survived by his wife Palma, his son Carl, daughters Carol Wuebker and Cathy Drummond, grandson Neil Wuebker, granddaughter Laura Heimlich and great granddaughter Ivy J Heimlich.
