Pacific 05/04/58: The USS Nautilus (SSN-571) suffers a fire in the insulation around one of its turbines as the ship is running submerged in the Pacific shortly after leaving Panama on its way to its Arctic mission. The insulation had become oil-soaked during the submarine's three years of operation and had caught fire. The fire is put out with minor injuries, but the submarine must surface to ventilate.
