At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

MELGAARD, Leif W., of Boonton, N.J., and High Bar Harbor, N.J., suddenly passed away on Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, in the place he loved on Long Beach Island. Born in Randers, Denmark, to Erik and Joan Melgaard, Leif came to the United States at the age of 11 along with his two brothers. The family settled in Boonton, where they have lived for generations. He graduated from Boonton High School and proudly served in the US Navy as a submariner during the Vietnam War. Leif met and married the love of his life, Barbara Joyce, in Boonton. They dated throughout his service and wed while he was still in the Navy. After the service Leif went to work in the family businesses, Joyce Molding and Troy Hills Manufacturing. He went on to own Troy Hills Manufacturing, working alongside his family. He pretended to retire in 2013. He is survived by his wife of 48 years "the best years of MY life," Barbara (Joyce); children, Michael, Brian and his wife, Amy, Jeffrey and his wife, Rachel; his favorite daughter, Mary and her husband, Eric Boomhower; brothers, Paul and Jens "Chris"; grandchildren, Benjamin, Caitlin, Grace, Penelope, Jolene, Rainer, Paige, and Fayette. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family at the Codey & Mackey Funeral Home, 107 Essex Ave., Boonton, N.J., on Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, 910 Birch St., Boonton, on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. The interment is private. To extend condolences or share a memory, please visit codeymackeyfh.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in Leif's memory to the Boonton Kiwanis First Aid Squad would be appreciated. "Tell everyone, I had a great ride." Published in Star-Ledger Sept. 10, 2018
