Back in 1987, Paul Simon caused an international incident when he recorded black South African musicians in Johannesburg. What he was attempting to do was marry up western and African music to promote his new album “Graceland”, but it became an international political football. His guest stars, Ladysmith Black Mombazo (clip 2), famous jazz trumpeter; Hugh Masekela (clip 2), and renowned diva singer Miriam Makeba (clip 3), were all South Africans but not allowed to perform in their own country because of strict apartheid rules. Simon eventually staged his African Concert in neighbouring Zimbabwe and thousands of South Africans, both black and white, crossed the border to watch the show. Some fantastic musicians here and the bass player with the fretless guitar is one talented guy.

Ladysmith Black Mombazo has been one of my favorite groups for decades. So beautiful. |

Jack Bruce also played a fretless bass, and imho was the best ever. He played with Cream and I think he is what made the song "crossroads" by cream a hit. |
