At random: The first submarine which actually sank another enemy vessel under combat conditions was the CSS HUNLEY built during the Civil War. The Union frigate HOUSATONIC on blockade station off Charleston, S. C. was the victim. The incident occurred on February 17, 1864.

WINDSOR - Mr. James David "J.D." Mayo Jr., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016 at Vidant Medical Center. 
A memorial service will conducted on Monday at 4 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel with Rev. Reece Jones officiating. 
J.D. was a native and lifelong resident of Pitt County and resided in Winterville for more than 37 years. He attended the Pitt County Schools and completed his undergraduate studies while serving in the United States Navy. He enjoyed a twenty year career while in the Navy and served primarily in food service while aboard submarines. Upon retirement, he continued in food service working at both East Carolina University and Cypress Glen Retirement Community.
