GUSTAVESON, Melvin Leroy "Gus", 85, died peacefully surrounded by his family on October 3, 2007 from complications of Alzheimer's at the age of 85. An eternal optimist he was known for his sense of humor, his commitment to helping others, his love for his family and his zest for life. When asked how he was on a daily basis, he always replied "Never had a bad day." Gus was born in Salt Lake City on Feburary 24, 1922, the middle of three boys born to Joseph and Edna Gustaveson. He grew up in Salt Lake City, attended East High School and was the first in his family to complete college. He graduated from Westminster College with a degree in business administration and engineering. He went on to complete one year of postgraduate work in electrical engineering at Northwestern University in Chicago. While at Westminster College Gus met the love of his life, Jane Bartlett or "Janie Babe", as he affectionately called her. They were married August 2, 1947 and just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Together they had three children who always knew the love he had for them. Gus served during World War II in the U.S. Navy on the submarines USS PERMIT (SS-178) and USS Spikefish (SS-404). He was very proud to be a submarine vet. It was in the Navy that he developed his love of cooking for large groups of people. He loved to cook and would never turn down the opportunity to prepare a good meal for his friends, family or the numerous organizations that would ask. His famous "Kookmobile" was often seen at local Salt Lake events where you would find him serving up his famous beef stew, barbeque ribs or burgers. He started his professional career with Honeywell working in Idaho Falls and Salt Lake City for 15 years. He then went on to form his own company, Automation Associates Incorporated, which he ran until 1992. Gus leaves a legacy of leadership, philanthropy, empathy for others and genuine love for his family and friends. He was an active member of the Masonic Order, serving as Past Master of Argenta Lodge #3; a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite; active member of the El Kalah Shrine with the Greeters unit, and was jolly St. Nick for the children at the Shriner's Hospital. His other affiliations included: President of the local chapter of Gyro International; President of the Westminster College Alumni board, active in the B.P.O.E Murray Lodge and an active member of the Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Jane Bartlett Gustaveson, his children and their families, daughters Karen McCune (Brent) Beaverton, OR; Julie Drake (Curtis), Salt Lake City; and son Bill Gustaveson (Valorie), Salt Lake City and six grandchildren Michael, Krista, Will, Rebecca, Megan and Matthew He was preceded in death by his two brothers Derald and Joseph Gustaveson. The twinkle in his eye, his smile, his laughter and his wonderful spirit of giving and love will be missed by us all. Public Masonic Memorial Services will be held at noon Sat. Oct. 13, 2007 at Evans and Early Mortuary, 574 E. 100 So. where friends may call one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to the Memorial Fund at First Methodist Church, 203 S. 200 E., Salt Lake City 84111 or to Westminster College Scholarship Fund, 1840 S. 1300 E., Salt Lake City 84105 .
