McGEHEE, Robert B., 64, of Raleigh, NC, died October 9, 2007, in London after suffering a stroke while on a business trip. McGehee was chairman and chief executive officer of Progress Energy, a Raleigh-based electric utility serving more than three million customers in the Carolinas and Florida. McGehee had served as CEO and chairman since 2004. Under his leadership, Progress Energy in 2006 earned the industry's highest honor: the Edison Award. The more than 10,000 employees of this Fortune 250 company knew "Bob", as he preferred to be called, as an approachable man with an engaging personality-a kind, gracious man, both humble and wise. He led by example in his commitment to integrity, excellence and people. Leaders in the community knew him as a strong supporter of the arts and of downtown Raleigh. Away from work, the tall, lean executive stayed fit by exercising regularly. He also loved to read and discuss books, and displayed a deep curiosity to learn about a wide variety of things. He could easily connect with people from all walks of life, putting them at ease with his wit and open manner. McGehee came to Progress Energy predecessor Carolina Power & Light in 1997 as senior vice president and general counsel. He held a number of executive positions with the company, including president and chief operating officer from 2002 to 2004. Before joining Progress Energy, McGehee was chairman of the board of Wise Carter Child & Caraway, a law firm in Jackson, Miss. In that role, he provided legal work for Entergy Corporation, CP&L and the former Houston Lighting & Power Co., among a number of other utility clients. During the 1990s, he also provided significant counsel to U.S. companies on reorganizations, business growth initiatives, preparing for deregulation, and other industry changes. McGehee earned a bachelor of science degree from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., in 1966 and a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1973. McGehee also was a graduate of the Nuclear Power School and Submarine School. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy on the nuclear submarine USS John Marshall (SSBN-611) and the diesel submarine USS Rock (SS-274). Among numerous professional and civic organizations, McGehee had served as vice chairman of the Atomic Energy Committee of the Public Utility and the Communications and Transportation Law Section of the American Bar Association. He also served on the boards of directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Institute of Nuclear Power Operators, the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Atlanta Center, the Nuclear Energy Institute and the Edison Electric Institute. He was also a member of the Florida Council of 100. He is survived by his wife, Jolene, of Raleigh; his father, William Ford "Billy" McGehee of Vicksburg, MS; one brother, Harvey McGehee of Clinton, MS; three daughters, Heidi McGehee King of Raleigh, Shannon McGehee of San Diego and Stasia McGehee of San Mateo, CA; one son, Robert McGehee of Boston; and two grandchildren, Michael Robert King and Sawyer James King. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Wake County United Way agency Interact: 612 Wade Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27605 or to the Carolina Ballet, 3401-131 Atlantic Ave., Raleigh, NC 27604, Attn: Development. Funeral arrangements are being made through the Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC.

PINO, Joseph A., 87, passed away on October 5, 2007 at his Miami home where he has lived since 1964. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1963. During WWII, Joe was assigned to serve on the submarines R-14 (SS-91), O-7 (SS-68), USS Lionfish (SS-298), USS Bream (SS-243) and saw action in the China Sea and the Pacific. He met his future wife, Sybil Williams at the USO Key West, Florida in 1942 and they married on Valentine's Day 1943. Joe subsequently served on many other submarines including USS Conger (SS-477), USS Archerfish (SS-311) as Chief of the Boat from August 1958 to October 1959, and the USS Chopper (SS-342). He was selected to enter Navy Nuclear Power School in 1960, commissioned as an officer and inspected Nuclear Submarines being built at Electric Boat, Groton, Connecticut before retiring. Joe was a life member of US Submarine Veterans World War II, and a long-time member of Knights of Columbus and the Holy Family Catholic Church Men's Club and Ushers. He is survived by his wife Sybil and his children Frances, Tony, James, Christopher and Joan, as well as nine grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Pino served on an R boat and an O boat and ended up inspecting nuclear boats as an officer. That's what you call doing it all...
