McWHORTER, William, 84, of Las Cruces, NM passed away on January 22, 2019 at his home. Will, son of the late Calvin and Tommie Opal McWhorter, was born October 14, 1934 in Seymour, Texas. He graduated from Lockett High School. He met his loving wife of nearly 63 years, Dorothy Taylor McWhorter through Rockcrossing Baptist Church. He then attended Texas A&M prior to joining the Navy where he served on the USS Theodore Roosevelt ballistic missile submarine, which was deployed to Holy Loch, Scotland. He worked as an Electronics Technician Supervisor for the Department of Army at White Sands Missile Range for 23 years. He was also proud to serve as President of the Labor Union. As a teenager he professed his faith in Jesus Christ and, after moving to Las Cruces in 1966, joined the First Baptist Church where he was a dedicated member. At First Baptist, he served faithfully as a Deacon and Gideon. He also served on the Board of the Gospel Rescue Mission. Will is preceded in death by his brothers Carlton, Larry, and Edward McWhorter and is survived by his wife Dorothy McWhorter; his brothers Tommy Dale (Mary) McWhorter of Argyle, Texas and Jerry (Sandy) McWhorter of Greenville, Texas; his sisters-in-law Yvonne McWhorter of Vernon, Texas, Lorena McWhorter of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and Irene McWhorter of DeBary, Florida; his son Michael McWhorter and his companion Suzanne Saldana of Las Cruces, New Mexico; his daughter Lisa (Manfred) Budtke of El Paso, Texas; and his grandchildren Kyle McWhorter of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Corey McWhorter of Thetford, England, Jessica Budtke of El Paso, Texas, and Erik Budtke along with his fiancé Ashley Doub of Austin, Texas. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to family, friends, and neighbors who have been so loving and supportive. Will lived a full, active, and giving life. His body has been donated to Anatomy Gifts Registry in Hanover, Maryland to advance medical research and education. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Friday, February 1st, at First Baptist Church, 106 S. Miranda St., in Las Cruces, NM. In lieu of flowers, bibles can be donated in memory of William McWhorter to Gideons International at https://www.sendtheword.org. Please send memory cards to Dorothy McWhorter at 1700 Camino del Rex, Las Cruces, NM 88001. Otherwise, donations can be given to the First Baptist Church Building Fund or charity of choice.
