At random: The USS NAUTILUS SSN 571 steamed 60,000 miles on a lump of Uranium the size of a golf ball. A diesel powered submarine would have required 3,000,000 gallons or 300 railway tank cars of oil. |

Master and Commander Posts: 1800 Location: Albany, GA. | Subject: RE: 1958 There was an expandable reamer in the M1LL toolbox by the lathe to precision bore inconel nuts to ring sizes. Used the four jaw chuck to center and drill the silver half dollars that had been beat over on the edge with a spoon, preserving the lettering on the inside was the difficult part. I even drilled a set of wedding rings made out of inconel. It seemed every time I had the lathe running to make something, another ring maker would show up. I guess we averaged about ten rings a patol. No one ever showed up with a meteorite tho.

Once the basic ring was formed, you put it into a plastic bag with a piece of rag loaded with lapping compound. Squish it for a hell of a long time and at the end a nice smooth and shiny ring. Still have them stored away. Both our fingers kind of grew a bit.

It lived in the lower level of the bow compartment right under crews berthing. My bunk was a few feet from the access hatch. Don't remember when it was started but I came awake like a shot when it was shut down. The silence woke me up! having an outboard bunk I heard lots of noises. Use to wake when we flooded Aux 3.

After a while got so used to it that when it was foggy, I couldn't sleep due to no landing jets passing overhead. I know that of which you speak.
