Not trying to stir up BS....just my ignorance. What is our benefit from keeping Puerto Rico as a protectorate?

It has a population of U.S. Citizens greater than 21 U.S. States, so thinking in terms of how America benefits seems misplaced. https://www.puertoricoreport.com/puerto-rico-and-federal-income-tax/

If you are asking why should we foot the bill for Puerto Rico's reconstruction after the Hurricanes, then it is simple. Because we are the same pack of fools that has footed the bill for folks that live in flood prone areas and continue to rebuild with our money in exactly the same place. Why we foot the bill for folks that actually choose to live on land below sea level. Why we shell out money for dams and levees to allow folks to try and live in areas that routinely flood. Why we subside rich folks beach front houses with cheap insurance. When we all know in our heart of hearts, folks are getting rich scamming this money to their own benefit, especially the politicians. Yet for some reason we keep re-electing these crooks. So why not Puerto Rico? |

First and foremost because they are US citizens. Walt makes a comment about money spent on supporting and taking care of US citizens. We do the same thing for The people of Mexafornia, US citizen and plenty of non citizens.
As U.S. citizens, Puerto Ricans receive many of the same financial benefits, and liabilities, of their mainland counterparts. They pay most federal taxes, including payroll, Social Security and Medicare taxes. But they do not pay federal personal income taxes. Puerto Ricans receive many, but not all, federal benefits. Think of all the non US citizens we support who contribute nothing. |
