At random: During their wartime operations submarines have engaged in some unusual maritime actions. One undersea craft slugged it out with the infantry and field artillery while other submarines destroyed a zeppelin, a bus, and a railroad train.

While doing my bi-monthly docent thing yesterday at the Naval Undersea Museum, I found an old drawing that I thought really speaks for our submarine fleet just prior to WWII.  This was of the S-4 design.  BTW: the S4 SS-109 was lost exactly 14 years to the day before I was born so no jokes about my 1919 qual boat guys!

John:
I believe the story of the loss of the boat you mentioned was the subject of an article in
Undersea Warfare magazine about a year ago.........Did it sink off Pearl? As I recall, they eventually
recovered the sub and it was later "buried" at PHNSY.....I also may have the "wrong" sub in the story....
memory ain't what is was 20 minutes ago.....

Nope, the S4 was rammed by the Coast Guard Cutter Paulding and sunk off Cape Code, MA on 12/17/1927...The story that you're talking about - that boat was used for "land fill" at Hospital Point, Territory of Hawaii but CRS won't let me remember her name - sheeezzz, back to the books!

The sub that sunk and was used as landfil at Pearl Harbor was the F-4 (SS-23). The USSVI Capitol Base was instrumental, a few years ago, in getting a new headstone for the F-4 mass grave at Arlington National Cemetery with all of the names of those who perished when the F-4 went down.
