At random: The USS NAUTILUS SSN 571 steamed 60,000 miles on a lump of Uranium the size of a golf ball. A diesel powered submarine would have required 3,000,000 gallons or 300 railway tank cars of oil.

Subject: My First Dive

My very  first dive on the Pickerel I was lookout.  When we cleared the bridge for dive the officer was to hang on the lanyard while I cranked the hatch shut.  When he hung on the lanyard it wrapped around the closing mechanism.  I was not able to dog the hatch, and me being so green I thought it might be our last dive.  It didn't help my panic when  I started to hear water washing over the hatch.  This happened my first day at sea.

As they used to say. "A near miss is a good learning experience, as long as you come out alive."
