SHARP, Noel Charles, passed away Friday, November 2, 2007, at his home in Stafford County, VA. "Chuck" Sharp was born in Canton, N.C., the son of John Sherman and Georgia Denton Sharp. He attended North Greenville Baptist Academy in Tigerville, S.C. and North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a submariner on the USS Bream (SS-243) in the South Pacific. He remained active in veterans groups and acted as an officer in the Tidewater Chapter of the US Submarine Vets of WW II. He pursued a career in public service and was proud to have been the only man to have acted as chief administrator in all the local jurisdictions, serving as county administrator in Prince William, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties, and in the mid-1950s, as assistant city manager for Fredericksburg. He was active in numerous community organizations, including the Kiwanis, Lions and St. Mary's Catholic Church. In his early Fredericksburg days, he served as scoutmaster for the local Boy Scouts. Until recently, he was active in the Stafford Democratic Party. His chicken barbeque cookouts to benefit local causes were renowned. Mr. Sharp is survived by his wife of 56 years, Edna Mae Poplin Sharp; four children, Charles Sharp and his wife, Lindy, of Fredericksburg, James Kirk Sharp and his wife, Wendy, of King George, Gregory Sharp and his wife, Janet, of Stafford, and Nancy Lee Sorrentino and her husband, Lou, of Stafford; numerous nieces and nephews, including locally Katharyn McGhee and her husband, James, of Fredericksburg; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his five brothers. A Mass of celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Memorials may be made to the rescue squad of one's choice or to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg. VA 22407.
