At random: "I don't know why we have to be down here on this hold down exercise(at the 60th hour). Hell, I went through this on the Thresher (SS 200) during WW ll with a Nip Sea Going Tug hooked onto our screw guards, trying to lift our butts out of the water. They didn't get us then, and these Tin Cans (ours) ain't going to get us now." -- "Hambone" Hamilton SD1 (SS). "Hambone" made 13 war patrols on USS Remora, SS-487, uttered these words in July 1957 during a hold down exercise off Kobe Japan.

I know the date has already past but this is still interesting.

Yes, that was good.

I knew we left Rabaul to rot on the vine rather than try to take it.

Rabaul is an interesting area.  One volcano to the side (Tavurvur) and one in the harbour (Vulcan); both are 'active,' the one to the side is very active still.

Deep water harbour but volcanic action has had the city/capital moved to Kokapo, on the south side of the harbour area.

On the north east side of Rabaul, in the main waterway at Tavui, is a ledge off the side of the cliff that permitted Japanese submarines to bottom and remain protected during air raids.  Their stores and maintenance facilities were kept in caves and when on the surface, the boats were tied to the Wall.  At a sign of trouble, they just bottomed until it was clear.

New Britain is good for diving and catching Mahi Mahi (dolphin fish).

Enjoyed my visits there when I was an advisor in PNG.
