McMASTER, Robert A., 69, of Fairfield, devoted husband of Jo-Ann M. McMaster, died Friday, February 19, 2021 at St. Vincent's Medical Center. Born in Norwalk, he was proud to have grown up as a Navy brat, and later served in the US Navy Submarine Force from 1972 – 1976 as a Torpedoman 2nd Class, Launcher-trained. Robert served on the George C. Marshall, the John Marshall and the Thomas Jefferson and was a member of the Submarine Force Museum in Groton. He coached Fairfield American Little League for 20 years and served on the Fairfield Parks and Recreation Commission from 2002 – 2011. Robert was a graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School, Class of 1969, and was employed by the Fairfield Board of Education from 1990 – 2018. He was a lifelong fan of the New Orleans Saints and the New York Yankees. He'll be remembered for his favorite saying, "If it's for the kids, let's do it!". In addition to Jo-Ann, his loving wife of 38 years, he is survived by a daughter, Candida Johnson and her husband Tom of Utah; son Garrett McMaster and his wife Vicki of Fairfield; grandchildren Savannah Olson and her husband Joshua, Nathan Johnson, Joshua McMaster and Dylan McMaster; great granddaughter Jaymie Olson; niece Yolanda Kostenko and her husband Stephen, and their children, Kyle and Alyssa; nephews, William McMaster (Tari), Ronald McMaster (Andrea) and James McMaster, PhD and his partner York, longtime family friend, Tess Alavata, and his beloved dog Chelsea. Robert was predeceased by his parents, William and Estelle McMaster; brothers Ronald and William McMaster, III; sister-in-law Linda Palmer; and his parents-in-law August and Johanna Thielemann. The family will receive visitors on Saturday between the hours of 10:30 and noon in the Fairfield Funeral Home of Edmund W. Dougiello, 36 South Pine Creek Road. Visitation will conclude with the rendering of full military honors. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Robert's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He was a quiet warrior until the end. Published in Connecticut Post on Feb. 23, 2021.
