BRYANT Douglas Almon, ENCS(SS), USN, Ret., 96, of Middleton, MA died peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on November 10, 2022. Born in Newburyport on August 23, 1926, he later resided in Madison, New Hampshire, where he joined the Navy in 1943 and served on the Submarine USS Sea Dog (SS-401) during World War II. He also served on the submarines USS Spinax, USS Sea Owl, USS Entemedor and USS Crevale after World War II. Doug also was a qualified First-Class Navy Deep Sea Diver and a qualified Scuba Diver and served a tour of duty at the Submarine Escape Training Tank at the Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut, where he taught submarine escape and scuba diving. His last tour of duty was on the submarine "Sea Dog" (the same submarine he served on during WWII), as USNR Submarine Division I-II Station Ship at the Naval Reserve Training Center, Derby Wharf, Salem, MA, where he was an instructor for Submarine Naval Reserve Personnel. Doug was a veteran of World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He also participated in secret submarine patrols during the Cold War. Doug retired from the US Navy in 1967 with the rank of Senior Chief Engineman (E8) with over 24 years of service to his country. After his Naval service, Doug was employed at several companies, including Varian Associates of Beverly and at Danvers State Hospital (Hogan Regional Center) where he worked at the Power Plant as a High-Pressure Boiler Operator from which he retired in 1998. Doug was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W, The Fleet Reserve Association and a life member of both "The Submarine Veterans of World War II" and "The Submarine Veterans Inc. Doug is survived by his loving daughters, Susan Bryant of Gloucester and Maureen McPherson of Danvers. Cherished grandfather of David Sochat and his wife Debra of Winchester, Amanda Sochat Oliveira and her husband, Luciano of Danvers. Loving great-grandfather of Alexandra, Christian, Sebastian, Jacob and Daniella Sochat, and special friend Karen Harribine. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mackey Funeral Home, 128 S. Main St., Rt. 114, Middleton, MA. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Funeral Home followed by burial with military honors at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody. HOFFER, Frederick Russell, 75 of Easthampton, MA died peacefully at home on November 5, 2022. Fred was born to the late Russell and Mary Hoffer in Jersey Shore PA on March 12, 1947. He grew up there with his two sisters, Karen Aucker (Kerry) and Sandy Hoffer. He attended High School in Jersey Shore and graduated Williamsport Community College with an Assoc. Degree in Electronics. After college he moved to California where he served in the Navy on submarines for six years during the Vietnam War. He was very proud of his time in the military and talked about it often. He was a member of the Legion Riders in Easthampton. Fred had a passion for sports, he umpired softball and refereed basketball for 35+ years. He enjoyed being an active part of the games and the people that were involved. His favorite pastime at home was reading and watching old war movies. He leaves his wife Therese Hoffer and their daughter Rebecca Hoffer and two children from a previous marriage, Frederick Hoffer (Jennifer) and Theresa Hoffer O'Brien (Dennis). He also leaves 6 grandchildren. The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given to us by Baystate Hospice. In lieu of flowers please send all donations to Easthampton Park and Recreation (C/O Youth Sports Programs), 1 Daley Field Rd., Easthampton MA 01027. A Memorial service will be held on November 19, 2022 at 10:00am, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2 Clark Street, in Easthampton. There are no calling hours, and the burial will be private.
