At random: Interests in submarines extends to royalty and presidents. The King of England and the King and Queen of Spain are among those who have made submerged cruises in submarines. As a result of a trip in an early United States submarine, President "Teddy" Roosevelt ordered extra compensation for personnel serving in the "Silent Service." President Harry Truman made a 440 foot dive in a captured German submarine. The first President to cruise aboard a nuclear submarine was President Eisenhower who rode the USS SEAWOLF out of Newport, Rhode Island on September 26, 1957.

BERRY, William Etley, reeled in his last fishing line and walked away from the water on November 11, 2022. The world's fish feel a little safer because Bill was one of the best to use a rod and reel. On December 14, 1943, the Lord broke the mold with Bill. He was born to the late Charles and Miriam Berry in Philadelphia and was the middle child of three. Bill went into the Navy after graduating from High School and became a Radioman on a nuclear submarine. He became the middle-weight boxing champion of the US Navy and never lost in 38 fights. Bill worked for Septa for nearly 20 years before retiring to Delaware. In his retirement, Bill loved to fish, camp, golf and spend time with friends and family. He loved his dogs almost as much as fly fishing, especially his Shih Tzus. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brother, (Charles Berry) and wives (Mary Berry and Chong Harris). He is survived by his sister, (Mimi Dolan Sushinski); daughters, (Jennifer Palmer and Lisa Journey); four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bill was one-of-a-kind and lived his life to the fullest. He had a wild side and loved to be a little ornery and mischievous. He enjoyed a good party and loved to eat crabs with sweet corn and drink a beer. Bill was a Believer and a member of Faith Community Church in Camden, Delaware where you can come on Saturday, November 19th to celebrate his life and share some great stories. The address is 2240 S. Dupont Hwy, Dover DE 19901. The service will start at 10:00AM, and Paster John Roseti will preside. HARTNETT, John, of Old Lyme, died peacefully in his sleep after 93 wonderful years of a great life on Nov. 10, 2022. Jack was born in Malden, Mass., one sister and two brothers, and lived in Old Lyme, for 60 years. Jack served in the Korean War with the US Navy on submarines. He earned a BSEE degree and worked for the U.S. Government specializing in the field of electromagnetic interference protection. Jack enjoyed running, golf, chess, horse racing and family. Jack married Lee in 1963 and had daughter Kelly who brought him grandson Zach. After retirement, Jack found a new passion of painting. Jack happily relaxed in his basement for hours listening to multiple TVs, eating chocolate delights and making beautiful paintings of people, animals and space.
