EDWARDS, Arthur Lee, CAPT, USN, Ret., 76, of Pawleys Island, SC died with his loving wife, Judie, by his side.in Charleston, SC on 8 March 2023. Born to Arthur and Nina Edwards in Hammond, Indiana on 16 July 1946, Lee was the oldest of 4 siblings. After graduating from High School in Chicago, Lee entered the US Naval Academy in the summer of 1964, joining the class of 1968. While at the Naval Academy, Lee distinguished himself academically and was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and played 150 lb. football. After graduation, he was accepted into William and Mary's law school but chose to remain in the Navy. Although initially wanting to be a Marine pilot, Admiral Rickover convinced Lee to join the Submarine Force after a long day of interviews at Naval Reactors. Following graduation and completion of Nuclear Power Training and Submarine School, Lee served on several submarines, including USS Sand Lance (SSN-660), USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN-641) and then nearly a decade in command of three different nuclear submarines: USS Nathan Hale (SSBN-623), USS Trepang (SSN-674) and USS Pennsylvania (SSBN-735). Lee completed his distinguished 30-year career working in the Pentagon in the OP-02 SSBN (submersible ship ballistic missile) program. Following his retirement from the Navy, Lee's experiences in industry included being a Program Manager with Lockheed Martin, Department of Energy's nuclear weapons production site remediation, eight years on the Professional staff at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab as well as a senior consultant in the office of the Chief Engineer, NASA Headquarters. After earning a second master’s degree, he taught Algebra at Springfield High School in Springfield, VA due to his desire to give back to his community. Locally, he was very active in the Pawleys Island community. Lee served on the Boards for the SC Maritime Museum and the Boys and Girls Schools in Georgetown, SC. In his spare time, he acted as the Secretary/Treasurer and Dockmaster for his neighborhood for many years. Lee was an accomplished pilot and avid fisherman who had a deep love of the outdoors. He loved to go hiking and snow skiing and his many fishing trips took him to Alaska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Idaho, and his beloved Waccamaw River by his home in Pawleys Island, SC. Lee and Judie traveled extensively in Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean. A diehard Bears and Cubs fan, Lee loved both football and baseball and attended the Little League World Series. Lee is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Judie Chestnut Edwards, his sister, Julie Holms, and brother, Brian Edwards. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on April 16th at the Georgetown Presbyterian Church located at 558 Black River Rd., Georgetown, SC. LYNCH, William Allen III, CAPT, USN, Ret., 91 died at the home of Jennifer Walters in Champaign, IL on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. He grew up in Pana. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953. He was a naval submariner, serving as a nuclear propulsion engineer. He then served as a naval intelligence officer working at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. After his Navy career, he retired to Savoy with his beloved wife, Joan. He enjoyed researching and collecting Asian ceramics and artistic prints, playing bridge, solving crossword puzzles, following the financial markets and birdwatching. He was an avid reader. He is survived by his daughter, Sidney Lynch of Honolulu; his son, William Lynch IV of Germany; and his daughter Jennifer Walters, of Champaign. Bill will be laid to rest with his wife in a private ceremony at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield. Published by The News-Gazette on Mar. 26, 2023.


SUTTON, James P., Jr., of Indialantic, Fla. died on March 20, 2023. Jim, or "Duke" as he was known to family and friends growing up, served in the US Navy and retired after 21 years as a Chief Petty Officer. Over the years he served as a medic, traveling with the Marine Corps and served on submarines for several years. He finished his service in the Military Police. He followed his military service with a second career in law enforcement with the Orlando County Sherriff's Department. Jim was predeceased by his father, JP "Pat" Sutton, his mother, Margorie Powell Sutton and a sister, Andrea S Courtney. He is survived by his wife, Connie Cumberledge Sutton; daughter and son, Kristi Williams (Jerry), Kenn Sutton, Stephen Westmoreland, and Brian Westmoreland; and his grandchildren, Alexander and Nicolas Sutton and Lucas Westmoreland. Jim is also survived by his sisters, Valerie S. Payne, Helen S. Adkins, Stephanie S. Gross (Terry) and Jean S Odachowski, all of Martinsville. Brownlie Maxwell Funeral Service, 1010 E. CARPEN, Albert M., 87 of Whiting, died peacefully at his residence on the morning of Friday, March 17, 2023. Albert was born to William Carpen and Barbara in Hammond, Indiana on April 21, 1935. (Miller) Carpen Hoagfelt. A lifelong resident of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community, Albert was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1953 and continued his studies at Angola College. He was a United States Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the submarine division and was a retiree of the LTV (Cleveland Cliffs) Steel Co., East Chicago with over 40 years of service. He was a member of the Whiting F. & A.M., Lodge 613 and was a true outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and golfing. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Geraldine (nee Brenkus) Carpen; father of Michael (Susan) Carpen, Sr and the late Jeffery P. Carpen; grandfather of Michael (Sabrina) Carpen, Jr., Albert (Marina) Carpen and Jonathan Carpen; dearest brother of Joseph Carpen, and twin sisters, Paula and Barbara Hoagfelt; dear brother-in-law of Patricia (Allan) Adzia, Michael Brenkus and late Anthony "Tony" (Wilma) Brenkus. Private services were held, there was no visitation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting.
