CORBETT, Rhodes Thomas, died while surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. He leaves behind his wife Ellen, sons Robert, Jeffrey, and William, daughters-in-law Zoraida and Elizabeth, and five grandchildren. Rhodes was born in Atlanta on January 13, 1939, and spent his early years in Florida, eventually moving with his family to Charlotte, where he graduated from Central High School. He attended the University of North Carolina as a Morehead Scholar while also on a Naval ROTC scholarship. After graduating from UNC, he served as an officer in the Navy, rising to become a Lieutenant on the USS Scorpion (SSN-580), part of the early nuclear submarine fleet. While stationed in Charleston, he was introduced to Ellen - a fellow UNC graduate. They married in 1965. Together they lived in Quincy, Massachusetts while Rhodes continued his Navy service, before they eventually returned to North Carolina, attended graduate school in Chapel Hill, and eventually settled in Greensboro. First in his class at UNC's Business School, Rhodes began a career in real estate development. He eventually started his own consulting firm, Corbett & Associates, and managed the construction and operation of the Southern Life Center building at 301 North Elm Street. He worked on numerous other developments, including the Center for Creative Leadership and Well-Spring Retirement Community. He also served as a member of the City of Greensboro's Planning Commission. In the 90s, Rhodes worked for FEMA, coordinating applications for emergency relief in the wake of several hurricanes. He spent the last years of his career managing development projects for both Moses Cone Hospitals and the Guilford County Public School System, including the renovation of Dudley High School. Rhodes was active throughout Greensboro. He coached recreational soccer for nearly a decade, served on PTA boards, and was an active member of Greensboro Rotary, hosting exchange students with Ellen and family. Later, he served for nearly 20 years as a poll worker and eventually a Precinct Judge for the Guilford County Board of Elections. Rhodes and Ellen were married for nearly 58 years. Together, they were avid gardeners, spending hours growing beautiful gardens, grape vines, fig trees, and blackberry bushes. Using the produce from their own yard as well as Greensboro's Farmers Markets, he made jams, preserves, chutney, and fruit cakes that he delivered to friends each holiday season. His fruit cakes were good, seriously good and based on a recipe brought by his mother's ancestor, Samuel Simcox, from Shropshire, UK to Lexington, Ky. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro, 3826 West Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro, NC 27401. Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel is serving the family and online condolences or tributes may be directed to www.forbisanddick.com. Published by Greensboro News & Record on Mar. 29, 2023.
