GRAYSON Ira Lee, III, DVM, 77, died unexpectedly at Mt. Carmel East Hospital following a short illness on Monday, April 3, 2023. He was born son of the late Georgette and Ira L Grayson, Jr. in Wilmington, DE on May 1, 1945. Ira was director of Animal Laboratory Medicine at OSU for several years and retired as a science teacher with the Newark City Schools after many years. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dr. Debra Grayson and brothers-in-law, David Smith, Daniel Smith and Douglas Smith. Ira proudly served in the US Navy Submarine Service from 1962-1969 on the USS Tecumseh (SSBN-628) and was honorably discharged. He received his Bachelor of Science degree, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Laboratory Animal Medicine degree from The Ohio State University and received his teaching degree from Capital University. Ira was a member of VFW # 2505 Lancaster and American Legion Post # 677, Lithopolis. Ira's family is grateful for the care and kindness he received from the nurses, doctors and members of the MICU staff at Mount Carmel East. Family will receive friends from 2-4 pm Monday, April 10, 2023 and 12:30-1:30 pm Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at SCHOEDINGER EAST, 5360 E. Livingston Avenue, Columbus, OH 43232, where funeral service will be held 1:30 pm Tuesday. Pastor Daniel Hille officiating. Interment to follow at Obetz Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Columbus Area Humane Society or Mount Carmel East Palliative Care or Hospice, in Ira's memory. Published by Schoedinger East on Apr. 6, 2023.


MATTHEWS, Stephen John, 58, died unexpectedly at his home in Norridgewock, Maine on Friday, March 31, 2023. Steve was born to John and Sandra Matthews in Skowhegan, Maine on Aug. 24, 1964. After graduating from Skowhegan Area High School, Steve enlisted and proudly served in the US Navy from 1982-1986 on a fast attack submarine. He was stationed in San Diego, Calif., and was very proud of his service for the remainder of his life. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Steve graduated from CMCC with an electromechanical degree and worked for many years for National Semiconductor in South Portland and eventually at Jardin Corporation as a highly skilled electro-mechanical engineer supporting their robotics and manufacturing processes until his retirement in August 2022. He was diverse in a variety of trades; when a friend or family needed help, he was there to help with no questions asked. Steve’s favorite pastime was spending time with his second family at Bloomfields, in Skowhegan, watching his beloved New England Patriots, playing cribbage, or just hanging out with friends. Steve’s family, including his nieces and nephews, brought him great joy. He is survived by his mother and father, Sandra and John Matthews, his sisters, Denise Statiras, her husband Botis and their son Nikolas, of Houston, Texas, Kelley Holland her husband Peter, their son Sam and daughter Annie, of Falmouth, and Jana Wacome, her husband Phil, their son Isaac, his wife Ashleigh, their daughter Nora and son Deacon and daughter Alanna and her husband Cody of Skowhegan. Visiting hours will be held at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Avenue in Skowhegan on April 22, 2023 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., with a service held directly afterwards at 1:30 at the funeral home.
