At random: ENS Sam Hunter, the first submarine casualty of WWII on Dec. 8, 1941. He was attached to Sea Dragon moored next to Sealion. He was killed by shrapnel from the first bomb hit on Sealion penetrating the conning tower of Sea Dragon. The second hit killed 4 men in Sealions Engineroom.

FILIUS, Daniel Kroon, 81, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord in Heaven on April 18, 2023. Dan was born in Grand Rapids on June 7, 1941. He attended Diamond Elementary and Central High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, serving from 1959 1966. He was in navigation as an electronic technician and served aboard the submarines USS Blackfin (SS-322) and USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN-624). He also spent time in Hawaii and traveled to Japan and Singapore. When he returned, he attended Grand Rapids Community College before graduating from Michigan State University. He became a science teacher for Coopersville Junior High School and later taught computer science. Dan also coached girls’ basketball and track. Dan met Teri in 1972 and they were married June 23, 1973. Their son, Andrew, completed the family in 1977. They spent many years at their home in Marne. After retiring in 1996, they enjoyed their retirement years traveling and camping. They later enjoyed their cottage in Pentwater and created many fond memories. Dan enjoyed collecting old coins, wooden decoy ducks, models of ships and history books. He is survived by his wife, Teri; their son and daughter-in-law Andy & Susan Filius; grandchildren Brooklyn, Alayna, and Emily; sister-in-law, Betty Filius; brother-in-law George (Anita) Reed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Sadie Filius; and brother, David. Dan's family welcomes family and friends to visit on Friday, May 5, 2023 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home Alt & Shawmut Hills Chapel. The service to remember and celebrate Dan's life will be held on Saturday, May 6 at 2 PM at Trinity Congregational Church on 4 Mile Road NW.
