SAFT, Burton Manly, CAPT, USN, Ret., 80, died March 21, 2013. He was born [April 24, 1942] and raised in Buffalo, NY. He was an avid Boy Scout and was proud to earn his Eagle Badge. His favorite scouting memory was attending the Boy Scout Jamboree in Israel in the early years of that country's history. Burt graduated from The Park School where he was active in sports and theatre productions. After one year at Cornell University, Burt's dream came true when he was accepted to the US Naval Academy where he graduated in 1965. He then reported to USS Hoel, DDG-13, which was stationed in the Tonkin Gulf, Vietnam. That experience convinced him that he would prefer to be underwater where he wouldn't get seasick. He was accepted into the Navy's nuclear power submarine program headed by Admiral Hyman Rickover. Burt had many stories of his interactions with Admiral Rickover and was very proud to have been trained by him. Burt's submarine experiences included serving on USS Halibut (SSN-587). He was part of the crew whose exploits were described in the book, Blind Man's Bluff, published in 1998. His only comments on the release of the book were that the "crab legs were delicious." Burt was commanding officer of USS Guitarro (SSN-665) from 1982-1986. Stationed in San Diego and in overhaul at Mare Island Naval shipyard, these years were the highlights of his naval career, and he was exceedingly proud of his crews and their accomplishments. After retiring from the Navy Burt decided to become a math teacher. He attended a math/science teacher training program at UCSD and joined the staff of El Camino High School in Oceanside, CA. He "complained" that his students didn't laugh at his jokes like his submarine crews did! He enjoyed teaching and being with the faculty at the school. Burt considered raising his two daughters to be his most important accomplishment. Amy and Emily gave him such pleasure and he spent as much time with them as he could. Having grandchildren made his life complete. Burt leaves his wife Carolyn, daughters Amy Ciocan (Claude) and Emily Saft (Leroy), his granddaughters Elwyn, Parker and Kelcey, his brother Lester (Maxine) and nieces and nephews who were very precious to him. He was very excited that his great niece Gabrielle recently finished her Eagle Scout project and is expected to become an Eagle Scout this spring. He was also delighted and so proud that his great niece Alexandra, a new US Navy Ensign, had joined the submarine force. Burt was preceded in death by his grandson, Dylan Riley Ciocan, his sister, Myra Ann Saft Stuart and parents, Gertrude and Ralph Saft. Published by San Diego Union-Tribune on Apr. 23, 2023.

NOREIKA Richard John, CAPT, USN, Ret, 85, died after a long battle with Alzheimer's and dementia in Carefree, AZ on April 5, 2023. Richard was born to Joseph and Elizabeth (Betty) Noreika in Binghamton, NY on May 25, 1937. After graduating from high school, Richard earned a degree in engineering from the United States Naval Academy, Class of '59, 3rd Company. Richard proudly served his country as an officer in the US Navy for 26 years. He had a distinguished naval career serving on the destroyer the USS Bailey and many submarines including the USS Patrick Henry, USS Tinosa, USS Batfish (as the executive officer), USS Kamehameha (as the commanding officer), and the USS Michigan Trident submarine (as the commanding officer). Richard was assigned sea duty for every Navy assignment from the time he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1959, until he took command of the Trident Refit Facility in Bangor, Wash. in 1982. He spent over seven years underwater and was away from his family over 65 percent of the time. Richard's last duty of assignment was at the Pentagon as head of electronics in Washington, D.C. Richard's individual accomplishments are too numerous to mention here. Richard was very proud to have served in the US Navy, and his family was just as proud of him. Richard's only regret was that it was a difficult life for his family. After retiring from the Navy, Richard was successful in his civilian life, eventually retiring to Carefree, Ariz., where he enjoyed tennis, golf and an active lifestyle. He was also very involved with the local Lutheran church and veterans' group. Richard is survived by his son Scott Noreika and his wife Sharon of Perth, Australia; his son Brian Noreika and his wife Lynn of Emmaus, Pa.; his daughter Lori Catrambone and her husband Joseph of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and his son Kent Noreika and wife Stacey of Mystic; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Jana Sullivan of Fort Collins, Colo.; and the mother of his children, Barbara Pascoe of Groton. He is predeceased by his brother David. Richard will be inurned at the Naval Academy Columbarium in Annapolis, Md., in a family service at a later date. Published by The Day on Apr. 23, 2023.
