At random: “What wordy praise can one give such men as these; men who … follow unhesitatingly when in the vicinity of minefields so long as there is the possibility of targets … Men who flinch not with the fathometer ticking off two fathoms beneath the keel … Men who will fight to the last bullet and then start throwing the empty shell cases. These are submariners.” - Eugene Fluckey in his final war patrol report aboard USS Barb

DiVICCARO, Thomas Michael, HTC(DV)(SS), USN, Ret., 70, died in the arms of his wife, Ann Holly, on Friday, April 21, 2023. Tommy was born to Anthony and Jennie DiViccaro in Newark, New Jersey on April 12, 1953. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and started an honorable and stellar 22 year career serving this country. Throughout Tommy's naval career he excelled in diving and salvage, completing underwater repairs to aircraft carriers, war ships and nuclear submarines. During the late 70s, Tommy completed First Class Diving School becoming a Mixed Gas (HEO2) diver qualifying him to complete deep diving ocean repairs. Tommy served aboard the USS Kitty Wake (ASR-13) Diving and Salvage Rescue ship. He became a forward deployed Navy Deep Sea Diver, working in an open ocean hazardous environment. In 1980, Tommy completed Saturation Diving School at the top of his class, allowing him to make deep sea dives up to 850 feet. Saturation divers lived in a diving habitat, dove from a diving capsule (PTC), and worked for extended periods of time underwater; sometimes days and weeks to complete decompression from diving and salvage operations. In 1981, Tommy was selected to work in a Chief of Naval Operations Special Projects diving command at Submarine Development Group 1, Detachment Mare Island, Vallejo California. During this period, Tommy was promoted to Hull Maintenance Technician Chief Petty Officer, HTC (DV) (SS) Submarine Specialists. It was during the period of August 1984 Tom participated in Top Secret diving mission of great national security importance to the United States. Details of these missions are unavailable and precluded due to security constraints. He served on the USS Parche (SSN-683). For Diviccaro's participation in this deep diving mission, he was awarded the Legion of American Merit medal; an award normally given to Officers. After leaving Special Projects, Tommy went on to become the United States Navy Detailer, deploying qualified deep-sea divers all over the world, in support of diving and salvage operations. Chief Petty Officer Thomas Diviccaro, retired from the United States Navy in 1994 leaving a legacy of selfless devotion to duty, the Navy and country he served. After leaving the Navy, Tommy had successful careers at Coca Cola and DeVics, (his trucking company hauling freight throughout the Northeast). Retirement followed. His time was filled with traveling - cruises in Europe, motorcycle rides thru out the United States, and American Legion Legacy Runs. The Chief enjoyed hosting neighbors serving delicious food smoked on his green egg. During the last few years, he enjoyed snowmobiling with family members; creating wonderful memories in Maine and New Hampshire. He got his dream boat in 2021 and had the most wonderful trip from Vermont to New Jersey. He has memberships with the Elks, Masons and American Legion. For all who know Tommy know his special smile would light up any room he entered. The Chief cared deeply for the people around him and made an impact on many lives. It's a wonderful world because you are in it. Fair Winds and Following Seas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Food Warriors.
