At random: When the nuclear powered submarine USS SEADRAGON surfaced at the North Pole while charting the Northwest passage in August 1960, the crew organized a baseball game. Because of Polar time differences, when a batter clouted a home run it would land in either the next day or in 'yesterday'.

BAUER, Herbert, 88, died peacefully at his home in Louisa, VA on April 25, 2023. He was born to German immigrants Paul and Louise Bauer in Brooklyn, NY on July 8, 1934. Herb is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Donya Bauer; his children, Jeanne Bauer, Herbert Bauer, Jr., Kathleen Spraggins, Barbara Phillips, and Michael Bauer; his eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and other extended family. Herb graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1957 and obtained a Master of International Affairs degree from George Washington University in 1967. He retired from the Navy with the rank of Captain in 1983 having commanded the submarine USS Sirago (SS-485), battleships and aircraft carriers, and post-retirement the pontoon boat! Herb had a long second career in the defense contractor industry working with Great Britain and the US. He served as an active member of Kiwanis Club of Fairfax (1983-1995) which included a term as Lieutenant Governor. Following his second retirement in 2002, Herb became the General Manager and also served on the board of the Blue Ridge Shores Community where he and Donya made their home. A loyal member of the Arlington Rod and Gun Club for over 40 years, he served as Treasurer and Historian for most of that time. Herb was a Washington Redskin season ticket holder for many years, brilliant debater, excellent dancer (and dipper!) and loved his family fiercely. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911, www.hopva.org. A celebration of Herb's life will be held at the Blue Ridge Shores Community Center, 924 South Lakeshore Drive, Louisa, VA 23093 on Saturday, May 13, 2023, from 3 to 5 p.m. Published by The Washington Post on May 13, 2023.
