Far from it. Irish tap dancing was introduced into America by the original immigrants from the Emerald Isle. In 1994 the Republic of Ireland hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin. The final prize for best song was awarded to Ireland (for the third time) but the routine called River Dance was only scheduled for the uninteresting interval period where no one paid much attention. This fascinating inspired choral and dance production changed everything. It eclipsed every other act on the night with its tremendous performance and was met by a standing ovation.

I am a fan of River Dance and I have the CD. I read somewhere that Michael Flatley could tap 28 times/second. Fascinating score by Whelan.
