PATTERSON, Lester Eugene, 84, died peacefully at his home on May 5, 2023. Even though “Corky's” passing was a shock to all, his impact on the lives of many will forever be remembered and cherished. Corky was born to Boyd and Frieda Patterson in Lakin, Kansas on December 10, 1938. After graduating from Vona High School, Vona, Colorado in 1956, Corky entered the Navy and bravely served his country on the submarine USS Chivo (SS-341) from October 15, 1956, to October 27, 1959. Following the Navy, Corky became a Master Electrician and served in that industry for most of his adult life. In addition to this, Corky was a Volunteer Fireman for the Stratmoor Hills Fire District for 10 years and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 113. Outside of his duties in the Navy and as an electrician, Corky enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, and hunting with his family. He was also involved in coaching his son, Terry Patterson, in baseball for much of his life. Once the grandkids entered his life, Corky was very much involved in supporting them in all their sporting endeavors. He was always there in the stands cheering them on. When Corky wasn't at a sporting event, he would find joy in going to Cripple Creek where he made friends and became a part of a community that will miss him dearly. Corky is survived by his son, Terry Patterson and wife Linda Patterson; daughter, Rhonda Olme and husband William Olme; and five grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Boyd Patterson, mother Freida (Young) Patterson and brother Jim Patterson. Corky's Celebration of Life will be at the I.B.E.W. Local Union Hall, 2150 Naegele Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80904 on May 25, 2023, at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please send donations to: Wounded Warriors Project or Tunnels for Towers. Published by The Gazette on May 17, 2023.

STAAS, George William, Jr, 84, a longtime resident of Moon Twp., died on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Born the son of the late George William Staas Sr. and Margaret Nihan Staas in Macomb, IL on December 5, 1938. He grew up in Woodstock, Illinois where he attended St. Mary Catholic School. He later moved to Memphis, Tennessee, and attended Christian Brothers University. George proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a submariner. One of the early submarines George served aboard was USS Archerfish (SS-311) from 1958 until 5/1/1959. He was an ETRSN at that time. He met his wife when he was stationed at the Rota Naval Base in Spain and she was teaching in a bilingual school in El Puerto de Santa Maria. In 1974, after knowing one another for just 3 months, they got married in Gibraltar and remained married for almost 49 years. After his years as a submariner, George was hired by Westinghouse as an engineer and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Taiwan, and Spain. He, his wife, and his son returned to Spain in 1980 for four more years during which time he worked in nuclear power plants in Almaraz and Asco. He was the beloved husband of Sandra Staas and the loving father of Douglas Alan Staas (Emily Dilts). He was predeceased by his sister, Sherrill Blanchard, and leaves behind cousins and numerous other family members in Rockford, Sycamore, and Belvidere, Illinois. Once retired from Westinghouse George had more time to pursue his hobbies of going on cruises, bowling, fishing, golfing, and traveling. One particular place he considered special was Hilton Head Island where he and his wife would cycle along the beautiful beach and throughout the magnificent trails. In addition to enjoying his hobbies, George became a dynamic volunteer guide for the Requin, the submarine located in Pittsburgh. He thoroughly enjoyed meeting the public and telling them with his wry sense of humor about life aboard a submarine. He became a member of the USSVI Requin Base and marched with honor and pride during the many parades he participated in. George will have private full military honors at his funeral which will take place at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. If desired, donations may be made in his name to the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA. www.huntsmanfuneralhomes.com Published on May 16, 2023.
