At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945.

MILLER, William Robert, 84 of Brewster, MA, formerly of Orleans, MA, died on May 16, 2023. He was born to Rebecca (Fore) and William H. Miller in Olla, LA on August 27, 1938. He served in the US Navy as a submariner onboard the USS Grampus (SS-523) and USS Kittiwake. He married Jean on November 26, 1960 and eventually settled to raise their family in South Windsor and Glastonbury CT before moving to Orleans, MA, where they spent a majority of their retirement. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and in retirement sailing his CatBoat, shell fishing, canoeing and walking the beach daily with his wife and with family during visits. Bill is predeceased by his parents, brother Harry and sister Rosa Gail of Louisiana. He is survived by his wife, Jean; his three children, Michael Miller of South Windsor, CT, Christopher (Pamela) Miller of Brewster, MA, and Melinda (Jeffrey) Woods of Colchester, CT; four grandchildren; and his in-laws, Cathy Mclelland, NY, George (Carole) Colwell, CT, Heather (Robert) Lundgren, CT; and Rosetta (Noel) Arnold, NY. Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the Nickerson Funeral Home, Orleans, MA at 9:30am to 10:30am followed by Mass at 11:00 am at St Joan of Arc, Orleans. The burial will take place at The National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at 1:15pm the same day. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Continuum Hospice and/or the Alzheimer's Association.


ARCHER, George Frederick Jr, 85, died while surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, May 7, 2023. George was born to the late George Frederick Archer Sr. and Mary (Rogers) Archer in Adams, New York on July 1, 1937. He was the oldest of five brothers. He is survived by his daughters Cherie (Chris) Brogan of Virginia Beach, VA and Susan (Alfred) Ferraro of Edenton, NC, grandsons, Shane Ferraro, Nicholas Brogan and his only granddaughter, Kaitlyn Brogan. Also, left to mourn his death are his brothers Robert (Elaine) Archer, Dale Archer, James (Ninah) Archer. He was predeceased by his brother John Archer and his wife Brenda E. Archer. One of George’s proudest accomplishments was enlisting and serving as a naval submariner in the United States Navy and was a Senior Chief Petty Officer at the time of his retirement. He joined the US Navy at the young age of 18 and retired from active duty in 1978. George loved horses and watching the Kentucky Derby every year. He also loved spending time with his family and hosting cookouts in his beautiful backyard. He was a compassionate man who loved to help those in need. His family lost count of the many charities he supported over the years. His family will miss him dearly. A private family graveside burial with military honors will be held on May 26, 2023.


MADSEN, Rees Low, 83, passed away on May 6, 2023 in Provo, Utah. He was born to Clyde and Rose Madsen in Yerington, Nevada on December 26, 1939. Rees grew up in a small town south of Tucson, Arizona. He graduated from Tucson High School. After high school he joined the United States Navy and served for 4 years. He spent several years aboard the submarine USS Sabalo (SS-302) traveling all over the South Pacific. Shortly after his discharge Rees met his future wife Cynthia Ambrose working at a J.M. Fields Department Store in Gainesville, Florida. She worked as a manager, and he worked in the stock room. They married on December 16, 1965 and soon moved to the western United States. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple May 13, 1966. Rees went on to finish his education graduating from the University of Arizona. After graduation, he was employed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Cynthia and Rees moved often, working on different National Wildlife Refuges in the west, the last being in southern Arizona. Upon retirement in June of 2000, they settled in Silver City. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Rees righteously served in many different callings throughout his life. He also served as a temple worker in the Gila Valley Arizona Temple. He loved the gospel, which was apparent by how faithfully he lived his life. Rees was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia; his parents Clyde and Rose Madsen and his brother James Madsen. He leaves behind his three nieces and two nephews: Chris (Michele) Madsen, Jason (Lisa) Madsen, Leah Madsen, Amy (Casey) Smallwood and Renae Madsen. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 22 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3755 N Swan Street, Silver City, New Mexico 88061. Rees will be laid to rest at Fort Bayard National Cemetery.
