TURNER, Thomas W., CAPT, USN, Ret., 80, died on May 15, 2023. He was born November 19, 1942. Tom served in the US Navy for 30 years, retiring as a submarine Captain. Preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Marshall and Jean Wagner Turner; first wife Marjorie Turner; and brothers, John H. Turner and Edwin G. Turner. Survived by his wife of 22 years, Tessa C. Turner; son: Tom Turner (Tara) and their children, Thomas J. Turner, Trevor W. Turner, Ty G. Turner, Tucker J. M. Turner, Tian M. M. Turner, Trace Y. L. Turner, and Talia J. P. Turner; son: George G. Turner (Kristin) and grandsons, Caden M. Turner, Caleb T. Turner, and Gavin Turner and their mother Stacy Schoonover; 6 great-grandchildren; siblings, Peter L. Turner (Kathryn), and Marsha Skarka; and sister-in-law Janet M. Turner. Visitation: Tuesday, May 23, from 5-7pm at Bellevue Memorial Chapel. SHAVER, Joe Len, 75, of Winston-Salem peacefully died after a brief battle with cancer while surrounded by family at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Monday, May 15, 2023. Joe was born August 4, 1947, and graduated from Parkland High School in 1966. He is a Cold War Veteran who enlisted in the US Navy in 1967. He served as a Torpedoman aboard the first in class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine USS George Washington (SSBN-598). Upon his honorable discharge, Joe returned to Winston-Salem. He managed 150 Gun and Tackle in Kernersville and eventually opened JLS Mobile Home Repair where he was the Owner/Operator for 30 years. Joe loved music. He was a deejay at Allen's Country Club/Bar in Kernersville in the 80's where he met his loving wife of 35 years. Joe wrote and recorded music in his music studio in his basement and wrote the "Hege Ballad" about Sheriff Hege of Davidson County which was played on local radio stations. Joe was an avid sports fan. He coached the Pop Warner football teams, the Kernersville Raiders and the Tiny Grayhounds, the latter of which he coached to the Pop Warner Super Bowl in 1996. Joe was predeceased by his wife Diane "Penny" Shaver, parents Conrad E. Shaver and Frances S. Musten, his stepfather John C. Musten, and brother Don Shaver. He is survived by his only daughter Kacie Shaver and Fiancé Michael Tyler of Bermuda Run, sister Sue S. Fox (Sam) of High Point, brother Kim Shaver of High Point, sister-in-law Jane B. Shaver of Walkertown. A memorial service will be held at Frank Vogler and Sons in Clemmons, N.C., on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 2 p.m. with Minister David Miller of Triad Church of Christ (Kernersville) and Sean Brewer officiating. The family will receive friends with a catered visitation at the Funeral Home immediately following the service. All are invited to share fond memories of Joe at that time. There will be a military burial with military funeral honors scheduled at a later date at the National Cemetery in Salisbury, N.C. MANN, Elmer "Sonny", CAPT, USN, Ret., died in Fernandina Beach, Florida on May 19, 2023. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Samuel and Virginia Mann. He was predeceased by his older brother, John Ray Mann of Tennessee and sister, Alma Ruth Cowing of Chester, South Carolina. Shortly after marrying his hometown sweetheart Barbara, Sonny entered the Navy as an enlisted Seaman Recruit and then progressed through the enlisted ranks to Chief Petty Officer, before being commissioned into the Navy's officer ranks where he advanced to the rank of Navy Captain. He served in the Navy's elite Submarine Force during his entire Navy career of 36 years. He was a graduate of the Navy's Nuclear Power School and earned bachelor’s and master’s Degrees from Valdosta State University. Among his Navy duty assignment, Sonny served in the commissioning crew of the nuclear attack submarine USS Haddo (SSN-604); Chief Engineer aboard USS TIRANTE (SS-420); Engineering Staff, Submarine Squadron 14, Holy Loch, Scotland; Engineering Staff, Submarine Squadron 15, Rota, Spain; Commanding Officer, USS Oakridge; Executive Officer, Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, Georgia; Executive Officer, Trident Submarine Refit Facility, Bangor, Washington; Chief Staff Officer, Submarine Squadron 14, Holy Loch, Scotland; and, as Commanding Officer, Naval Submarine Support Facility Lower Base, Naval Submarine Base, New London, CT. Sonny and his family traveled to many parts of the world during his Navel Career, and resided in Holy Loch, Scotland and Rota, Spain for a total of eight years, where the Navy operated Nuclear Guided Missile Submarine Squadrons. During his Navy Career, he was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations, up to and including the Presidential Legion of Merit. Following retirement from the United States Navy, Sonny was employed at, and retired from the U.S. Department of Energy Pantex Plant located in the outlying plains of Amarillo, Texas. At Pantex, he served in several management positions, up to and including Weapons Quality Assurance Department Head. The Pantex Plant is a high security nuclear weapons facility where the Nation's nuclear weapons are built and retrograded for all branches of the United States military. Following retirement from Pantex, Sonny and his wife Barbara relocated to Fernandina Beach, Florida where he worked in real estate until his complete retirement. Among his community associations were the Nassau County Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA); Fernandina Beach Police Auxiliary Corps; Lions Clubs of Fernandina Beach and Callahan, FL; and the Men's Newcomers Club. In addition to his beloved wife of 65 years, Barbara, Sonny is survived by four children: son, Samuel Mann of Nashville, TN; daughter, Cindy Holt (Flip) of Ponte Vedra, FL; daughter, Shari Eberspeaker (Dave) of Rock Hill, SC; son, Randy (Joy) of Kingsland, GA; and grandsons, Justin Mann of Raleigh, NC; Thomas Mann of St. Simons Island, GA; Eric Eberspeaker, LT, United States Navy, Norfolk, VA; and Jeffrey Eberspeaker, LTJG, United States Navy, San Diego, CA. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina Beach on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends and family beginning at 1:00 p.m. until the hour of service. Sonny was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Fernandina Beach where he will be laid to rest in a private service, held in the Church's Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the First Presbyterian Church, 9 North 6th Street, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034 "Youth Programs" or Humane Society of Fernandina Beach, FL.
