BEAVER, Michael DeWayne, 58, of Chester, Virginia died surrounded by his wife and children on Friday, May 19, 2023. He was born to Shirley Beaver (80) and the late Mickey Beaver in Fort Campbell, Kentucky on September 9, 1964 and was raised in Forest, Mississippi. After proudly serving for twenty years as a submariner in the US Navy, Michael continued to give to his country for an additional twenty years as an employee of the Department of Veteran Affairs, performing duties as an IT specialist in imaging at McGuire VA Medical Center. He greatly enjoyed photography and carpentry and could often be found talking for hours on end in his workshop about anything and everything. Survived by his wife of 21 years, Dawn Beaver (54 from Richmond, VA); daughter, Jessica Beaver (31 from Charleston, SC); son, James Beaver (28 from Hartford, CT); stepson, Joshua Allen (34 from Richmond, VA); daughter-in-law, Taylor Mason (33 from Richmond, VA); grandchild, Kody Mason (13 from Richmond, VA); brother, Johnny Beaver (53 from Lafayette, TN); sister, Edna Massey (60 from Philadelphia, MS). A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Road Amelia Courthouse, Virginia 23002. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/ or to a military charity of your choosing.


SPARGO, William R., 94, of Gastonia died peacefully surrounded by family on May 18, 2023. Bill was the son of Ernest M. Spargo and Viola S Spargo of Gastonia and brother to Christine S. Lynn. Preceding him in death was his wife of 67 years Mable T. Spargo and son Steven T. Spargo. Left to cherish his memory is son Scott Spargo and wife Robin of Gastonia, grandson Jeff Spargo and wife Ashley and great granddaughters Grayson and Tessa of Lincolnton. Bill was a veteran of the US Navy service aboard the submarine USS Flying Fish (SS-229). A retired member of the US Postal Service, Bill was a letter carrier for 35 years and also served as an officer in the NALC. Bill was a member of Covenant Baptist Church in Gastonia. Service will be at Carothers Funeral Home, 2205 Williamsburg Drive, in Gastonia on Wednesday May 24, 2023. Visitation is at 1pm with service at 2pm and graveside to follow. TURK, John S., 75, of Elkhart, died at his home while surrounded by his family on Monday May 22, 2023. He was born to Phil and Jane Turk in Elkhart on June 12, 1947. He married Gwen S. Sawyer in Elkhart on September 11, 1971. After graduating from Elkhart High School, Class of 1965, John attended North Texas State University for 2 years. He served his country in the US Navy on a nuclear submarine during the Viet Nam War where he received the Bronze Star. He was the owner of American Trailer Supply from 1971 to 1999. He then bought and sold real estate until the present time. He was a member of Simonton Lake Sportsman’s Club. He volunteered for Stone Soup Promotions. Surviving is his wife, Gwen; daughter, Kim (Aaron) Coates of Goshen; son, Scott Turk of Elkhart; 6 grandchildren; his sister, Maryann (Les) Thimlar of Fishers, IN; and sisters-in-law, Paula Turk of Elkhart, Chuck and Karen Andrews of Raleigh, NC and brother-in-law Bill and Shirley Sawyer of Elkhart. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ross Turk. Visitation will be 10am to 12pm Thursday June 1, 2023 at Beulah Missionary church, 57595 Old County Road 17, Goshen, IN 46528, where funeral services will be at 12 noon. STAWASZ, Albert, died on May 20, 2023. He was born to Frank and Eva Stawasz of Holyoke, MA on March 16, 1943. Albert enlisted in the US Navy in 1961 and attended submarine school. He became qualified in submarines and was pinned with his "Dolphins" in 1965. He attended both Radioman Class "A" and "B" schools. He worked as a staff Radioman for COMSUBDEVGRU 2, then worked at a base Communications center as RM2(SS). During his naval career, Albert served on several submarines and surface vessels including the USS Sierra (AD-18), USS John Adams (SSBN-620), USS Aeolus (ARC-3), USS Cubera (SS-347) and USS Pargo (SSN-650). Albert also completed 3 Sea Trials and made deterrent patrols. Following his Honorable Discharge from the Navy in 1970, Albert took the pride he had for his country, his service, and his love for submarines into the private sector where he worked for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, ME. There, he repaired and refurbished submarine sonar transducers. Albert met and married the love of his life, Barbara, in 1964. Following several relocations throughout Maine and NH, they settled in Searsport, ME where they could be closer to family and the ocean they loved. When Barbara became disabled in 1999, Albert chose to retire and attended to her needs with great devotion and compassion until her untimely passing in 2015. He was very proud of his children and never hesitated to lend a helping hand or to tell them a funny story. His honor and devotion towards all that he loved, made him a wonderful doting husband, loving father, and an amazing "Grampy" to his grandchildren. Albert remarried in 2017 and was very dedicated to attending to the needs of his 2nd wife, Kimberly. In his retirement years, Albert enjoyed collecting coins and studying genealogy. Albert is predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Barbara; and a daughter, Lynn. Albert is survived by his 2nd wife, Kimberly, and his 4 children; David, Jean, Donna, and Lynda, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. The burial will take place at a later date in Newington, NH. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast, ME. PETTIT, Royce E. Jr., of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Reynolds, IL, died peacefully on April 17, 2023. He was born on February 1, 1928 and was the eldest child of Royce E. Pettit and Dorothy Clarke Waite Pettit. Foregoing his senior year of high school in Reynolds, he attended a military prep school. Royce attended the US Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1950. His specialty was as a submariner and anti-submarine warfare specialist. Upon graduation he served on the destroyer USS Perry as the ASW officer. He then spent time at the submarine school in New London CT, upon graduation there he was assigned to his first submarine USS K-1 then the USS Picuda (SS-382). In 1956-1958 he was in charge of the Naval ROTC at the University of Louisville. He was then assigned to the submarines USS Tang (SS-563) followed by the USS Ronquil (SS-396). In November 1959, he married his wife Odile Simats whom he met in Vancouver, Canada during shore leave. From 1961-1963 he was seconded to the Royal Australian Navy as an ASW instructor. He then became the commanding officer of the USS Baya (SS-318). Moving to Hawaii he was on the staff of the USN ASW Force, Pacific. Royce then moved to the East Coast to become the ASW officer on CV-18 USS Wasp. Moving to West Germany in 1969 he was the information officer for Joint Defense Headquarters Europe. His last duty station was as Executive Officer for Great Lakes Naval Training Center. While there he earned his MBA in business management from Roosevelt University. Royce retired from the Navy as a Commander in June 1976. A couple of years later he moved to Tempe, Arizona where his sister Janet and her family lived. Royce worked for the Maricopa County Civil Defense for 18 years till his full retirement. Tempe would remain his home until he moved into a senior retirement home in 2021 where he passed. Royce was an avid worldwide traveler, loved poetry, scripture, puns and, above all, his family. He belonged to many organizations including Boy Scouts, Masons, church choir, retired submariner group and many charitable organizations, such as meal on wheels which he worked with for over 20 years. Royce was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his sisters, Janet and Rosalie; his brother, James; his son, David (Patricia); daughter, Anne-Marie (Mark Markham); grandson, Kye. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 29th, 2023 at Reynolds Cemetery, Reynolds , IL.


WILSON, Richard Gordon, 92, died surrounded by his loving family on May 21, 2023. He was born to Gordon Wesley and Eva Mary (Dussault) Wilson in Hartford, CT on September 27, 1930. He attended Sacred Heart School in Hartford before the family moved to Sharon, VT. He graduated from South Royalton High School in 1948. He enlisted in the Navy in November 1948 and served in the submarine service in New London, Connecticut until September 1952. He moved to Midland, Texas and ran a bakery route. He met Anna Marie Glennan, and they were married at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Midland on August 4, 1956. They moved to Windsor, Vermont and started their family of four children. Richard worked with his father at Windsor State Prison and ran the cannery department. He enjoyed bowling with friends and co-workers. He then owned and operated an Esso gas station and LP gas delivery service. In 1971 the family moved to Welch, Oklahoma, and he and Anna bought an Apco gas station, and then opened Wilson’s of Welch grocery store. In 1981 they moved to Lone Grove, Oklahoma, and he and his son-in-law Jim owned and operated D&J Hardware and Building Supply until his retirement in 1995. His son Matthew worked beside him several of those years. In 2017 he and Anna moved to Joshua, Texas. Two years after Anna’s death he moved in with his son Gary and daughter-in-law Nita. Richard was an avid Red Sox fan and thoroughly enjoyed his trip with Gary and Nita to Ft. Meyers, FL to watch spring training. His most recent trip, to Vermont, was made special as his sister Nancy joined members of the family, and he visited with several classmates and widows of two of his bowling partners. In January of this year, he was diagnosed with a glioma brain tumor. Gary and Nita took care of him until he entered hospice house, six days before his death. He is survived by four children: Maureen Marie Schumacher (James), Kathleen Louise Elliott, Matthew Wayne Wilson (Beverly) and Gary Eugene Wilson (Nita); grandchildren: Julie (Schumacher) Burch, Laurie (Schumacher) Martin, Wesley Schumacher, Michael Wilson, Marissa (Wilson) Sowers, and Jordan Elliott; step-grandchildren: Wendi Moore, Jeremy and Bradley Yosten, Gabrielle Hall, and Analise Booher; great-grandchildren: Mason and Landry Hunt, Alexander Burch, Madeline, Mallory and Samuel Martin, Eli and Brooks Schumacher, Caroline Elliott, Alexandria and Haven Wilson, Emmalynn Sowers; and step-great-grandchildren: Dakota, Austin, Ashtyn, and Addyson Burch, Charlotte Greer, Willow and Gabe Sowers, Vivian, Penelope and Millicent Booher, and Nathaniel and Grace Hall. Richard is also survived by sister Nancy Wilson, Hartford, CT and various family, friends, and classmates. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Eva, wife Anna Marie, sister Blanche Turner, and grandson Jeffrey Curtis Schumacher. There will be no public wake or rosary. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church in Burleson, TX on Friday, May 26, 2023 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Reehan Soosai Antony, SAC officiating. Interment of ashes will be at a later date in Ardmore, OK. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. Ann Building Fund for Renovation at 100 SW Alsbury Blvd., Burleson, Texas 76028, the Community Healthcare of Texas Hospice House at 301 Medpark Circle, Burleson, Texas 76028, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or the charity of your choice. The services are under the direction of Mountain Valley Funeral Home in Joshua, TX. The family wishes to extend a particular thank you to Reverend Reehan, hospice nurses and aides, visiting angels, Eucharistic ministers from St. Ann, and the Hospice House nurses for taking such good care of our loved one.
