JOHNSON, Richard Mentor, 85, died in Dripping Springs, Texas on March 26, 2023. Richard was born to Robley Lane and Ruby Ware Johnson in Memphis, Tennessee on September 4, 1937. After he graduated from Columbia high school in Richland Washington, Richard joined the United States Navy in 1955 and proudly served his term in the submarine force as a Yeoman 3rd Class Petty Officer. After separating from the Navy in New London, Connecticut he went on to study Political Science, graduating from the University of Connecticut. He had a long career in the textile manufacturing business and retired as a corporate HR director. Richard was an avid gardener who enjoyed cultivating his vegetables and flowers from seed. He loved to read and was especially interested in American History. His most recent pursuit was promoting awareness of climate change and environmental issues. Well known for loving to travel, especially long car drives, and keeping in touch with distant family and friends Richard made his way across the United States several times. He was especially proud of his blended family of seven children and is survived by, Kelly Sherkat, Nicholasville, Kentucky, Tracy Johnson, Lexington, Kentucky, Leigh Wells (Matt) Nicholasville, Kentucky, Matthew Johnson (Shannon) Leander, Texas; and stepchildren Theodore Thornell, Houston, Texas, Sarah Ushkow Chicago, Illinois, and Laura Haas (Markus) San Antonio, Texas, his grandchildren Cyrus Sherkat (Amber), Stella Thornell, Matthew Johnson, Madeline Johnson, Saul Ushkow, Leo Haas and great-grandchildren Ari and Kendrick Sherkat. He is also survived by immediate family members, brother Eugene Johnson (Sherrie) Great Plains, Montana, and sister Catherine Pearsall (Lee) Clarkston, Washington. He is preceded by his parents, brother William Johnson, grandson Jackson, son-in-law Mitchell Ushkow, and his wife Cecilia Bunker Johnson. Richard's life will be jointly celebrated with his wife Cecilia Bunker Johnson in Cincinnati, Ohio this June 10th, 2023, at Geo. H. Rohde & Sons Funeral Home. His interment is planned as a small family gathering at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville Kentucky, his desired resting place near historical landmarks of the namesake ancestor he so admired. SHORT, James O., died peacefully at his home in Hampton, Virginia on Saturday, May 27, 2023. He was born the second oldest child of 14 to Herbert James Short and Agnes Elizabeth Mangrum in Newport News, Virginia on May 4, 1942. James was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, and a dear friend to many. At an early age James confess Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He was a faithful member of New Bethel Cathedral Church. He was a 1961 graduate of George P. Phoenix High School in Hampton Va.. During his senior year in high school, James joined the Navy Reserve. After graduating, he served our country in the US Navy for 21 years. He worked as a yeoman at the Fleet Hometown News Center in Norfolk Naval Station, which produces over a million news releases each year. As the administrative chief, he handled lots of paperwork, reports, and correspondences for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. He reported to FHTNC in 1977 and worked there until he retired. Throughout his 21 years of service, he served on various submarines, cruisers, and destroyers and had several assignments starting and ending with Norfolk Va., Charleston, S.C., Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and Newport, Rhode Island. James and Diane were married on September 26, 2018. James had always loved taking photos of his loved ones to remember special moments. Other hobbies were tending to his garden, fishing, and crabbing. James is survived by his wife, Diane; his son James A. Short, his daughter Veronica L. Jegels (Harold), Diane's two daughters Lela and Sabrina, his siblings, including Diane Clark (Burtin), Mattie Barner, Rodney Taylor, Brandon Taylor, Faithy Taylor, and Valerie Taylor (Kelly), also left behind 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Sadly, James was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert, Agnes, son Ricardo L. Short, and siblings Herbert M. Short, Thomas E. Short, Wilhelmina E. Short, Carl M. Short, Otis Taylor, and Vanessa Taylor, Gerald Taylor. We love you Dad, and we MISS You terribly!! The viewing will be held Friday, June 9, 2023 from 4 pm- 6 pm at Nickelson-Cummings F.H. Services will be held Saturday, June 10, 2023 @ 11 am at New Bethel Cathedral Church COGIC 457 Fox Hill Road Hampton, VA 23669.
