WILLIAMS, William Franklin, LCDR, USN, Ret., 87, of Waterford, died peacefully at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London Monday, July 3, 2023. Willie is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia (Greason) Williams; his identical twin brother Roy Williams of Breezy Point, N.Y.; son Robert Williams; daughter Jayne Williams Dumais; son-in-law William Dumais II; four grandchildren: William Dumais III, Ryan Dumais, Alexis Dumais and Nicholas Williams); great-grandchild Khaleesi Alice Williams; and his most loyal friend, retired naval officer David Hartman. Willie and his identical twin brother Roy were born Jan. 16, 1936, in the Flatbush Avenue neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y., to English immigrants who immigrated to the United States earlier in the decade. After graduating from high school, Willie worked at a local candy factory and later enlisted in the US Navy, where he served our nation over a distinguished 22-year military career as a submariner in the United States Navy's "Silent Service." Willie rose from being an enlisted member and retired at the rank of lieutenant commander. Throughout Willie's career in the US Navy, he served on the USS Volador (SS-490), USS Tusk (SS-426), USS Pollack (SSN-603), USS Canopus (AS-34) and USS Sabalo (SS-302). He was one of the last surviving crew members who took part in "Operation Sandblast." Commanded by World War II submarine hero, Captain Edward Beach, the USS Triton (SSN-586) was the only submarine built with two nuclear reactors and was the first vessel to circumnavigate the globe submerged, a demonstration of American engineering innovation and military prowess. He would often recount his stories from the voyage with his grandchildren around the dinner table. Willie was a devout Roman Catholic and regularly attended Sunday service at St. Joseph's in New London. An avid seafarer and boater, Willie could often be found lending his vast technical expertise and good-natured approach at Thamesport Marina with his many friends and fellow veterans, taking his sailboat out on the Thames River, or spending family time on his boat at the nearby islands. The Williams family is grateful for the dedicated attention and expert care provided by the cardiac care unit and the dozens of other staff at Lawrence + Memorial who aided Willie in his final weeks. At this time, there are no visiting hours, no memorial service and no funeral planned by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org; 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, TN 38105), as he was always moved by their compelling commercials and their dedication to the children.
