At random: In a fraction of a second they are projected into eternity and will never possess a final resting home. They have graves without bodies, they are an exceptional breed of people....It is of utmost pride to me to have met these men, those lords that I salute, praise and admire. - Winston Churchill on Clearance Divers September 1944

Back in the old days, I had a guy on my shift named t. Swanson. He was a nuke ET converted from a stew burner.
One evening in All in the family Edith and Archie stumbled trying to find their insurance agent Swanson, pay a premium. Edith growled about cancellation and whatever for the entire program. Finally Archie asked Edith if she was sure the sgent's name was Swanson, She assured it was over and over. Then she quipped It was Swanson or Hinklemeyer one. That did it. Everyone must have watched that night, I never heard Swanson called anything from that day on but "Hinklemeyer"

Sometimes folks focus on the weirdest things. I have but to think of the nicknames and how they were earned aboard the Boat to realise that.

We had a non-qual come aboard and go to mess cooking right away. His first name was Sylvester, forever known ever after as Sally within minutes. To this day I can't say I ever knew what his real last name was.
