At random: NAUTILUS has long been touted as the first Nuclear powered submarine. In fact, she was the first nuclear powered "anything". Nothing that moves was ever propelled by nuclear power before NAUTILUS.

BALDUZY, George Daniel, 96, of died on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at the Vermont Veteran’s Home, Pownal, VT. He was born son of the late Daniel & Catherine (Lissy) Balduzy. in New York, New York on September 7, 1926. George attended numerous elementary schools on Long Island and at 17 years old, joined the Navy. He served in WWII and was a submariner for 4 years. He qualified in submarines in USS Brill (SS-330) in 1946 and was SM3(SS) when released by the Navy. After receiving his high school war diploma, he attended St. Francis College in NYC and earned a Bachelor of Biology and Chemistry degree. He was the widow of Louise Marie Behlmer, they were married for 49 years. George was a Sales Representative for numerous companies, including U.S. Steel and W.R. Grace. He leaves his daughter, Diane L. Balduzy of Pownal, Vermont as well as two half-sisters, Roberta Spillane of New York and Linda Gaul of California. At the request of the family there will be no services for George.


BOVEY, Robert L, PhD, CAPT. USN, Ret., 85, died in Winchester, Virginia on Saturday, July 8, 2023. Bob, as he was universally known, was born in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, but spent his formative years in Lincoln, Nebraska. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1959 with a BS in Marine Engineering and married his wife Rosalind in 1960. He received a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1964 and an MS, US Navy Nuclear Power Training Program in 1965. During his 22 years in the Navy, he served on both fast attack (SSN) and ballistic missile (SSBN) submarines. His last sea duty assignment was as Captain of the USS Sand Lance (SSN-660). His last shore tours were as Special Assistant to the Director of Central Intelligence and Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense. Bob’s honors include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the National Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as an international business consultant. Following that Bob spent 25 years with the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) working on matters of national security, homeland defense and taking on jobs that leveraged his deep understanding of naval and nuclear warfare. His professional activities included IISS, INFORMS and ISE. Bob was a member of his father’s Masonic Lodge for 60 years (Cotner Lodge #297 in Lincoln, Nebraska) and a member of the American Legion Post 199. Bob was a loving husband, a kind father and a generous friend. His interests included Civil War History and his farm in Maurertown in the Shenandoah Valley. He and Rosalind resided in the North Ridge area of Alexandria and were intensively involved in civic affairs from 1969 until their move to Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury retirement community in 2018. Bob is survived by his wife Rosalind, their son, Rob and his wife Michelle, and son, Stuart Bovey. Also surviving is his sister and husband, Mary Jean and Fran Blumenstock, his sister-in-law and husband, Ann and Ed McEndarfer, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Ruby Bovey. A memorial service for Bob will be held in the chapel at Westminster Canterbury on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 11 am with Reverend Dr. Bill Everhart officiating. A reception will be held following the service. Interment with Masonic Service, military honors and bagpipe will follow the reception at 2 pm in Mount Hebron Cemetery. BYLER, Carl David, 85, of Grand Prairie, Texas, died at Methodist Mansfield Hospital in Mansfield, TX on July 12, 2023 Services are July 27, 2023, at the Bean Massey Burge Funeral Home in Grand Prairie, TX. Visitation is at 11:30 a.m. and the memorial service will follow at 12:30. The burial service, with military honors, is at 2:15 p.m. at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery. Survivors include three sisters, Janet (John) Gundy, Normal, IL. Carol Garman, Overland Park, KS, and Mary Lou Brady, Orrville, OH, nieces and nephews Gary Garman, Jacquie (Jay) Love, Erin Gundy (Peter llemang), Greg Brady, Kimberly Jacquet, grand nieces and nephews, Jacob (Rhiannon) Mann, Connor Boisen, Kyle Boisen, Talia Allemang, Ty (April) Young and Joseph Pertee, and great grand nieces and nephews Zoe Mann, Harper Kern, Jacob Mann, and Luka Young. He was preceded in death by his parents and Craig Jacquet, husband of Kimberly. Carl was born December 10, 1937, in Bellefontaine, OH, the son of Joseph Earl Byler and Norma Arlene Yoder Byler. At Smithville High School, where he graduated in 1955, he was known as "Mousie". In 1957, Carl enlisted in the US Navy and served aboard USS George Washington SSBN-598), the first operational nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine in the US Navy.
