At random: There are more airplanes at the bottom of the ocean than there are submarines in the sky; therefore I chose submarines over aviation. |

Master and Commander Posts: 1814 Location: Boydton, Virginia | Subject: RE: How a World War Two Submarine Works OK, got it.... send me my dolphins! Reminds me of several years ago my primary care physician was interviewing applicants for an additional Dr. for her practice. When she asked what one guy what his education/ experience was regarding family practice he stated that he has been watching a lot of Utube's. (He was not hired, thankfully)! I did not intend to steel your post, Gary, sorry. Steamboat sends

COMSUBBBS Posts: 3671 Location: Kansas City Missouri | Subject: RE: How a World War Two Submarine Works Searching for "dinky in the pump room" led here and smiles occurred. Of course, just found a cartoon TV show called "Housebroken" about talking pets and animals sniffing, puking and farting that often induces long lost guffaws. Master and Commander Posts: 2490 Location: East Coast of Wisconsin | Subject: RE: How a World War Two Submarine Works My mistake. Original construction had the dinky between 3 and 5 main engines. Guppy conversion trashed the dinky. The HP air compressors made to to the AER in the dinky's place. (Guppy IIA). EB boats had a GM 8-268A for dinky. What was installed on Portsmouth boats?

COMSUBBBS Posts: 2672 Location: New Jersey | Subject: RE: How a World War Two Submarine Works Sirago's engine rooms are duplicates of Pigs description. HPAC lower flats of fwd rm. Refrigeration compressors in lower flats of Aft rm. We still had all 4 engines though. Sirago was a Portsmouth boat. I did find out they removed #2 engine for a bubble maker. Can't remember the exact name of it. It was supposed to keep the boat "Undetected" under certain circumstances, by enveloping the boat with tiny bubbles???

COMSUBBBS Posts: 2672 Location: New Jersey | Subject: RE: How a World War Two Submarine Works I remember. The bubble maker was called a Prairie Masker.

Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 853 | Subject: RE: How a World War Two Submarine Works Volador (guppy III) was a 4 engine boat much as you described Sirago. The prairie masker blowers (bubble makers) were located in the fwd pump rm. prairie system put the air out the leading edge of the screws, masker out belts surrounding the boat.

Master and Commander Posts: 1605 | Subject: RE: How a World War Two Submarine Works When the Pickerel was being used to take staff guys from Pearl to qualify for their sub pay we'd overnight off Lahina in Maui. We'd do a weekend filled with ASW exercises. In '68 Maui had one hotel and no condos between the Plantation Inn and the Royal Kaanapali Hotel. It was still mostly a huge pineapple plantation and not very touristy. In our ASW exercises we accidentally got hit by an acoustic torpedo fired by a hellicopter in the left screw and limped back to Oahu with an odd jerk and shudder in our reduced getty up. That damaged screw kept us in Pearl for a week until a I'm told a $50k replacement one was located with the necessary holes and air lifted to Oahu. A funny story is my civilian barber in the late 70's took his wife to now touristy Maui for a promised vacation. He liked it so much he sold his barbershop, bought aloha shirts, and took up driving tourists in a cab there. After a few years she wanted to visit the mainland to supposedly visit relatives. Rudy complied and as soon as they got in California she divorced him because of favorable laws for her. Rudy was now working as a barber in the shop he use to own. The good news was the new owner was a friend and they handled it well. The shop was in the San Fernando Valley and Rudy stayed for fifteen more years until he just moved to Baja California in Mexico to live out his years. k repaced
