At random: In 1921, a United States submarine, the R-14, having run out of fuel at sea while looking for the missing tug USS Conestoga, rigged sails from blankets and hammocks sewn together. Bunk frames were used for yardarms and booms. The torpedo loading king post for a fore mast, the torpedo loading boom for a mizzen mast and the telescoping radio mast, for the main mast. The R-14 sailed 100 miles in five days to the port of Hilo, T.H. at a speed of two knots. It has been reported in March 2016 that the Conestoga has been located 3 miles off Southeast Farallon Island, probably sinking with-in a day of leaving port. All hands lost.

Boats in the picture are Sea Leopard (inboard) and Entemdor (tieing up to Sea Leapard).

But the question posed in another forum is: What Port?

Looks like the Med but I've never been there so I'm just tossing that out.

I was there in the 90's, but the Monte Carlo I saw for 10 hours had nothing but fine yachts and luxury craft clouding the view - I didn't see no stinking submarines.  I have to wonder in those days if dress blues got them into the casino.  That would have been a liberty to to never forget!

In 1965 our skipper allowed us to pack civvies on the MED trip where we used them to gain access to the casino in Gibraltar. In 1963 the officers had civvies aboard and some loaned them to members of the crew while in Monte Carlo.

Back in 2015 Karen and I took a cruise from Dover to Monte Carlo on Regent Seven Seas. Best cruise I've been on. The ships only carried 750 people not the 3500 like Disney and Princess. The other real benefit is that ALL Regent cruises are kid free in that no one under 18 allowed. When we got to Monte Carlo we put on our best clothes (coat and tie) because we heard they would not let you into the casino if you were not wearing proper attire. We sat outside the door of one casino and had martinis. Most expensive drink we had ever had. $32.00 a piece. That alone will make you only have one.

September 1972, while in Nice, France, three boat sailors decided to take a cab to Monte-Carlo, Monaco. Let the driver pick a casino, couldn't get inside as none of us were 21. Same cab took us back.
Lessons learned.

In the 90's I had a friend working in Madrid.  My self and a friend went to visit them.  From there my friend and I flew to Nice for the weekend.  Saturday we took the train to Cannes  I walked the topless beaches, my friend (girl) only wanted to shop.   Sunday we took the train to Monaco.  We did the tourist things in the morning, and I had to see the casino.  My friend refused to go inside for who knows why.  I got into the American section and made a $60 on a mistake in blackjack that made me a winner, but caused an irate Frenchman to get irate - he was correct.  After that for about $10 in francs I entered the European portion of the casino.  I didn't understand many of the games so I went into the bar.  I think it was free, I was too embarrassed to ask, but it didn't look like anybody paid.  We missed the last bus, so my now ex-friend and took the train back to Nice.  The European section is classy and devoid of neon and glitter and very quiet.  The American section was much less glittery than Vegas with some neon and noise.  I was dressed pretty casually including tennis shoes, but there was no dress code.  In the European section I saw the fine formal attire and I really stuck out - but nobody said anything.

I thought I had seen classy yachts and power craft around SoCal, but nothing compares to the boats in the harbors of Nice and Cannes.  I was fascinated seeing extravagantly dressed rich people leisurely having coffee and breakfast in their richly appointed dining areas.

In '63 Sirago tied up in Monte Carlo over the xmas holidays. The biggest ship in the harbor was Onassis' Yacht, a converted Canadian ship. No Uniforms allowed in the casinos then.

Having met few rich folks, I've surmised they are a bit odd.
Got curious about the Onassis tar... found the bar image (she's for rent)

The bar in the European section was only slightly larger than that.  It had the elegant dark wood and  had oil paintings minus the foreskin and whale teeth armrests.  They did a short lived series on the casino maybe fifteen years ago.  The series wasn't that good, but what surprised me was the bar was an exact, and I mean an exact recreation of the bar I sat in.

Hard to imagine that in the 18th century, all these now affluent resorts along the French Riviera were small impoverished fishing villages. An English writer traveling through the area wrote a book on its pleasant climate and its beneficial effects on medical problems such as consumption and related respiratory conditions. This caused a massive influx of British nobility who turned up pale and close to death looking for miraculous cures for their ailments so these places gained a reputation for rich clientele and charging exorbitant prices to cater for them.

This extravagant cost of living started back then and progressed down through the years right up to the present day. The rich don’t care because they have the wherewithal to buy anything they want. The high prices are set to prevent cruise tourists and scallywag sailors from the world’s navies from staying too long in their precious small bubble of paradise of the rich, privileged, and the droves of beautiful pretenders who feed off them. I was last there seven years ago and nothing had changed. My experience of Monaco in the 60s was an unpleasant meeting with Imelda Marcus and a group of HMS Tiptoes crew members which can be found on search. Punch in HMS Tiptoe and The Steel Butterfly, Pedro, and all posts. People were convinced because they had money and power that they could buy anything but found that it didn’t quite work when it came to the Royal Navy.

The song below by Peter Sarstedt talks about one of the beautiful pretenders aligning to making money and possessions off the rich. Good luck to them all.

Isn't Monaco tax fee also.  I seem to remember a few world class men tennis players moving there as a tax shelter.
