SHIVER, Nelson Lee, 78, of Armuchee, GA, died peacefully at his home on August 1,2023. Nelson was born the second child of Howard and Bernice Shiver in Rome, Georgia on January 11, 1945. Nelson is a member of Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church. He is a graduate of Armuchee High School class of 1963, and a graduate of Coosa Valley Vo-Tech. Nelson was a proud member of the US Navy. He was especially proud of his service on three different submarines where he served in the communications department. His training as a radioman offered a great deal of travel and experiences. Nelson received unique training in communication as he served on one diesel and two nuclear submarines. Nelson retired after 26 years which included serving at a variety of duty stations in the Navy. His last duty was serving as senior enlisted with a team of nurses and doctors who set up and provided care for the military in the field hospitals. This little Rome Georgia boy had seen a large portion of the world, but he wasn't finished with his traveling just yet. After retirement from the Navy, Nelson traveled extensively in the US and internationally installing and servicing packaging systems. In 2005 Nelson retired as Plant Engineer from Made Rite Sandwich processing plant in Ooltewah TN. He then began to pursue his hobbies of playing music, drag racing, motorcycle riding and traveling. He was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Bernice Shiver, his stepmother Evelyn Shiver, his first wife of 26 years, Joyce F. Shiver, and second wife of 25 years, Linda G. Shiver. Survivors include his wife, Harriett Shiver; brother and his wife, Leon and Evelyn Shiver; two daughters and their husbands, Rena and Eddie Ganus, and Leigh and Don Chamblee; five grandchildren, two great granddaughters, and one nephew and stepchildren from second and third marriages. Friends and family are welcome to share their thoughts and memories as we celebrate Nelson's life and the footprints he left in our lives. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 10:00 am in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, with Pastor Mac McCurry officiating. Interment will follow at the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, on Saturday, August 5, 2023, from 9:00am until the time of the service.
