When a destroyer comes alongside the oiler or carrier to take on fuel, they play a “break away song” on the 1MC and topside. Ours onthe good ship Stump was “on the road again” by willie nelson. A daring bosun mate put the canned heat song on. OOD had a sh/t fit, but the skipper was somewhat amused.

We had an incident on Sirago, when we lost one of our Badger fresh water compressors, we got a new compressor high lined to us along with tanks of fresh water from a Destroyer. Their breakaway song was from the movie River Kwai. It was cool watching the can peel off into the late afternoon sun. It was something that I never saw happen before with a submarine, although we used to high line often on the carrier I was on.

We never discussed politics on my boat, but over 90% of our arguments in port was over the radio in the AB. There were the sh-- kicker music lovers and the didi-bopper music lovers. When I did my mess cooking stint I was only focused on diddy-bop and changed the station back to KPOI constantly. Problem was it seemed all the more senior enlisted men demanded sh--kicking music.

I have to wonder if that's an issue these days? I don't even know what I would listen to these days.

Seadragon was all s**t-kickin in the early 60's, tuned to KAHU in Waipahu.
