Master and Commander Posts: 1005 Location: NE Florida | Subject: Pig has departed Ken Henry (Pig Pen or The Pigger) of the Sailor's Home in GulfPort Fl has departed on Eternal Patrol. Ken, Engineman Extraordinar, was on Archerfish during her time in LantFlt mapping the sea floor so the Boomers of the future could sail undetered, among other diesels he served on, became a volunteer Fireman in Fla afte retirement (tht is anther story), after his wife's demise Pigger moved to the Sailor's Home. More importantly became history keeper of SubVets WWII, researching and reporting Eternal Patrol notices of those heros who rode real submarines during that conflict referred to as WWII. I would call the Pigger and ask about a WWII Boat Sailor, he would email back with a history, naming the boats, War patrols, when & why change of rank (both directions), etc. A Class Act that never will be repeated. Master and Commander Posts: 1269 Location: Hopewell Junction NY | Subject: RE: Pig has departed SAD DAY for ALL. I never meet the man, but we certainly shared a ton of info on personnel over the years. My last ET Chief on Sea Robin sailed with him on Archerfish. I'll miss him, and owe a large debt to him for being able to maintain my SS-407 data. HAND SALUTE SHIPMATE!

I had a few email conversations with him and Seattle base has one of his fellow 'Goat on the Boat' shipmates as a member, "Nasty" Ness! Here is the story for any interested: http://www.ussarcherfish.com/afishpic/goat.htm Fairwell and fair winds and following seas, Pig! You will be missed. I looked forward to your daily posting on the BBS. Hand Salute! Two! R.I.P.

Old Salt Posts: 272 Location: Vista, Ca. | Subject: RE: Pig has departed I never met Ken. I did email him for infor asd we all did. I roomed with "Sandy" Sanderlin, radioman, and he told me about the Archerfish and crew. Sandy and I roomed together a Mare Island and Hunters Point. Tonight I lift a pint to Ken. I truly wish I had met the man and I will stumble down the road knowing I never had the honor. Rest Peacefully, your duty is done.

My dad and Pig were both instrumental in helping me navigate my Tusk websites treacherous waters. Sadly, Pig and I never shook hands, but, spoke and emailed often. Missing people doesn't get easier. Admin Posts: 2297 Location: Renton, WA | Subject: RE: Pig has departed This news is truly sad - what a great shipmate Ken Henry was! I found out about the passing of so many old friends thanks to his tireless efforts with the Obits. I tried to remember to post an occasional thank you to Pig here and there as I truly appreciated his efforts. With the dominance of social media in our lives and the near demise of old-school BBS's like this one, I often joked that if it weren't for Ken, there'd be no reason to come look here anymore This loss stings a lot. So long old friend... you were always there it seemed... and this new vacancy is vast! Sailor rest your oars...

Master and Commander Posts: 1890 Location: Patterson, New York | Subject: RE: Pig has departed Very sad to hear this news. Several times he posted information I sent to my boats web masters for inclusion on the web sites. I remarked once that he posted history by putting up the obits.

Master and Commander Posts: 1269 Location: Hopewell Junction NY | Subject: RE: Pig has departed Whenvever there was a SS-407 loss, I could count on him to email the notice or as a minimum HILITE SS-407/Sea Robin so that I was sure to notice it. HAND SALUTE SHIPMATE. RIP

Master and Commander Posts: 1005 Location: NE Florida | Subject: RE: Pig has departed For many years, Seawolf Base at Panama City FL has hosted a pre-Christmas party for the Gulf Coast USSVI members. They've had great speakers like Dex and Tom Bowser (USS Drum curator), the local Sea Scouts under John Duncan, the St Mary's submarine museum folks, and Ken. Many of the attendees are aging DBF types, getting thinner as the years go by. I always said hi to Pig and pulled up a chair around him to hear Archerfish stories and listen to him praise the AFRH at Gulfport. Thanks, Ken, for the work and the memories. Coyote

Admin Posts: 2297 Location: Renton, WA | Subject: RE: Pig has departed Do any of you know the specific mechanisms Pig used to acquire his obits data? This was a great service and should be continued. I just don't know where to start but am willing to at least see what a time commitment it would take. Maybe a group of us could get it done so it's not a huge burden on any single person? Sure miss Ken... it's so unsettling to know he's gone!

COMSUBBBS Posts: 2672 Location: New Jersey | Subject: RE: Pig has departed He did Ric. Speaking to him years ago via email I was thanking him for his efforts in finding those sub vets who passed, he told me he was using some program that scanned all the online (papers) that announced these deaths.

Master and Commander Posts: 1269 Location: Hopewell Junction NY | Subject: RE: Pig has departed There WAS an online FREE service that I subscribed to for years. You could specify a keyword(s), strings, etc and it would deliver resiults to your email. He probably was using the same one It has since been discontinued.
