I just finished reading this book by John D. Lukacs. It is an excellent account of 10 American POW's who escaped from Japanese prison camp it the Philippines in 1943. The book was accurately researched from first-hand accounts , official records, Japanese soldiers and Philippine natives. His description of the horrendous atrocities committed by the Japanese caused me to put the book down more than several times.
It is an account of 10 solders and sailors who not only endured unspeakable torcher in the camp, but also while escaping through impenetrable swamps and jungle, all the while eluding Japanese searching for them.
The reason they took their life in their hands in making their escape was to inform the American military and public of the horrors being inflicted upon our troops and sailors in captivity. However, upon finally reaching the US, FDR and military would not release their story for political reasons. If you ever had misgivings of Truman dropping the bomb on Japan, perhaps this book will give you pause.
