At random: The USS Blenny SS 324, on her last patrol of WW II sank 63 vessels. One by torpedo and 62 by deck gunfire, demolition charges set by boarding parties or by burning. On several occasions shotguns were fired through the boats bottoms. These were all vessels under the 500 ton JANAC limit for tonnage sunk and not counted in the "official" totals or ships sunk. This is also a record for the most vessels ever sunk by a submarine on one patrol.

ARMSTRONG .. ..Shannon Gary Armstrong was born October 9, 1943 to Robert Shannon Armstrong and IvaDell Jane (Behnke) Armstrong at Immanuel Hospital, Mankato MN. He passed away September27, 2023 in his daughter's home in Rupert Idaho from complications of mesothelioma. 
Shannon graduated from Owatonna High in 1961. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy specializing in nuclear submarine operations. In the Navy he travelled extensively. Eventually he worked at the Idaho Naval Nuclear Base in Idaho Falls. During his time here, he met his wife Pauline Warr Armstrong and raised six children. 
Shannon was active in the American Legion Post 10 and the Elk's. He volunteered extensively either in the kitchen or working in the youth programs. 
Shannon was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and IvaDell Armstrong; his sister Susan Armstrong; his beloved wife Pauline Armstrong; and son Kirk Shannon Armstrong. 
Shannon is survived by his siblings, Judy Armstrong of Kenosha, Wisconsin, David (Linda) Armstrong of Owatonna Minnesota, and Becky (Randy) Rose of Mankato Minnesota; his children Sheila (Dan) Duffin of Rupert, Idaho, Shellie (Carl) Hardman of St. George, Utah, Greg(JoAnna) Armstrong of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Lorie (Ray) Hurst of Star, Idaho, and Brad Armstrong of Rupert, Idaho. Shannon's extended family includes 29 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.  The funeral will be held Saturday, October7, 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Heyburn Idaho. Military honors will be rendered by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Group.


WALLACE ... ...LCDR James J. Wallace passed away peacefully on October 2, 2023. He was born on November 26, 1935 in Indian Orchard, MA. He was the son of the late Canice J. and Margaret Cox Wallace. Jim attended St. Matthews School in Indian Orchard and graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield in 1953. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and attended Fleet Sonar School in Key West, FL. His first sea duty was the Destroyer USS Wren DD 568, homeported in Norfolk, VA., where he performed Sonar and Signalman duties from 1954 to 1958. Jim reenlisted in 1958 and transferred to the Submarine Service. Following Sub School, he was assigned to the USS Cavalla SS244 in New London, CT. In 1960, his Commanding Officer recommended him for Officers Candidate School. That same year Jim met the former Judith Marchetti. In September 1961 he entered OCS in Newport, RI. On February 9, 1962 he was commissioned an Ensign US Navy. 
On February 17, Jim and Judy were married in St. Mary's Church in East Springfield, and on February 18 they left for Jim's next duty on board USS Catfish SS339 in San Diego, CA. Jim and Judy traveled to duty stations in Athens, GA., Pearl Harbor, HI., Charleston, SC., where Jim completed four Polaris deterrent patrols aboard the USS James Monroe SSBN622 followed by duty at Subase, New London, CT., and Supply Officer on the Staff of Commander Submarine Squadron Sixteen in Rota, Spain.

In 1971, he graduated from the Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA with a BS in Business Administration. After a tour as the Naval Plant Representative at the GE Ordnance Plant in Pittsfield, MA., Jim retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander with 22 years of service. He joined GE and its successor, Lockheed Martin for 20 years, and retired in 1995 as the Manager of Property Administration. Jim is survived by the love of his life, Judith Marchetti Wallace, with whom they shared 61 years of marriage, a true love that we all strive for. Three daughters, Kimberly Brady (Tim) of Walpole, MA, Kelly Tuggey (Tom), Kristen Wright (Scott Bradley), both of Pittsfield, MA. A son, Kevin Wallace of Dalton, MA. 
The family will be holding a Celebration of Life at the Wahconah Country Club, 20 Orchard Road, Dalton, MA, on Monday, October 9, 2023 from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm, All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
