TAYLOR .. .. Thomas Wellington Taylor passed away on August 27, 2023, in Escondido CA. He was 95.
Thomas was born in Virginia in 1928 to William and Alice Taylor. He joined the Navy submarine force near the end of WWII as an enlisted man, retiring 20 years later as an officer. After his Navy career, he became a Quality Manager at Westinghouse and a rancher. After his retirement, Thomas and his wife, Isabel, moved to Ramona in 1999 and then to Escondido in 2022.
Thomas's boyhood during the Depression was spent on his family's farm, where he developed a love of music and skill on the guitar. He even sang on the local radio station a time or two. But he and his two brothers, Billy and James, his sister Frances, and his parents did not have enough to eat. Thomas's solution was to join the Navy, because he heard they had the best food.
While assigned to guard duty on the USS Piper, Thomas was likely the only person to have held a loaded gun on John Wayne. One evening Mr. Wayne, probably preparing for a role, and his entourage started up the gangplank and Thomas told them to halt. They kept approaching. Thomas pulled his .45 and held it on the Duke and repeated that they couldn't board the sub. Wayne asked him, "Do you know who I am
" Thomas said yes, then Mr. Wayne laughed and said "Good job sailor."
Having developed an interest in the potential of nuclear-powered ships, Thomas secured an interview with Admiral Hyman Rickover and became one of the admiral's right-hand men, assisting with the creation of our modern nuclear Navy.
Thomas was assigned as nuclear officer on the USS Triton (SSRN/SSN-586). She had the distinction of being the only US submarine powered by two nuclear reactors. Thomas always spoke highly of the skipper, Captain Edward Beach. Captain Beach wrote "Run Silent, Run Deep," later made into a movie featuring Clark Gable. In early 1960, with Thomas on board, Triton became the first vessel to execute a submerged circumnavigation of the earth.
After retiring from the military, and after a brutal winter in Buffalo NY, Thomas and wife Isabel moved the family to Sunnyvale CA, because he liked the sound of the name. There he began his work at Westinghouse.
While still at Westinghouse, Thomas and Isabel founded and operated Fairwind Arabians, a horse breeding, training and boarding facility in Gilroy CA. Having grown up on a farm, Thomas was able to essentially build all the barns, covered arenas, stalls, and outbuildings by himself. Rickover had been correct in recognizing his unique talents.
After moving to Ramona, Thomas joined the Kiwanis, spent time drawing and also became a photographer. The San Diego Union-Tribune published several of his photos. Thomas joined the Kiwanis harmonica band, which entertained seniors in assisted living and children in hospitals. Isabel also developed her talents and won a first prize for oil painting at the San Diego County Fair.
Thomas was predeceased by Isabel, who passed away on Oct 22, 2022. Thomas is survived by his children Tom Taylor, Joanne Taylor, Paul Taylor, Margie Taylor-Ponte, and Sarah Taylor; grandchildren AJ Ponte, Brian Ponte, and Kevin Ponte; and great-grandchildren Scott Ponte and Skylar Ponte.
Thomas and Isabel, his beloved wife of 72 years, will be interred in perpetuity, with military honors at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr., San Diego, CA 92122 at 10:30am on October 23, 2023.

FORNEY .. .. Charles “Chick” Forney (89) of Farmington, NY. Chick’s soul was peacefully lifted into the arms of the angels in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 8 with his loving wife Kathleen by his side.  Chick, fondly known as “MacGyver” to his children because of his ability to fix anything, was born to Ralph and Pearl (Miller) Forney on January 12, 1934, in Syracuse, NY. Following his graduation from East Syracuse High School, Chick enlisted in the Navy. He went to submarine school in San Diego, CA and New London, CT, then was based at the US Naval Station, Key West, FL. Eventually he was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea on the USS Trumpetfish-SS 425 submarine during the Korean War as an Engineman 2 SS. After being honorably discharged in 1956, Chick worked as a trim carpenter with his father in East Syracuse while attending night classes at IBM Computer School. Chick became a Systems Analyst for Chase Bank (then Lincoln Bank), which brought him from Syracuse to Fairport, NY in 1979. He remained with Chase until he retired. Post-retirement Chick filled his time with a few part time jobs including flower delivery, parts delivery for Hoselton Auto, and the “Pop Store” in Fairport. He also spent some of his free time traveling and loved to support his grandchildren by attending performances and sporting events. Golf was a passion of Chick’s, which he was fortunate enough to be able to play, right up until this past summer.
Chick is survived by Kathleen (Deuel) Forney, his wife of 11 years who cared for him with love and unwavering grace during his long illness. Chick is also survived by his 3 sons, Steven (Julie) Forney of Pittsford, NY, Michael (Linda) Forney of Henrietta, NY and Jeffrey (Luisa) Forney of Boca Raton, FL, his 2 step-sons Daniel Hershey (Meara Jones) of Sudbury, MA and David Hershey (Denise) of Webster, NY, grandchildren Christopher Forney (Lydia Parks), Kevin Forney (Stephanie), Ryan Forney, Jack Forney, Stephanie Forney, Jeannie Forney, Jolyn Forney, Meghan Forney, Colden Forney, Jackson Forney, Aidan Hershey, Eva Hershey, Elianna Hershey, Asher Hershey and Patrick Hershey, great grandchildren Landon, Elliot, Josephine and Nora Forney, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Penny and John Langenstein, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Chick was steadfast and courageous. His confident jesting nature was treasured by all who knew and loved him. He was a huge personality who loved golf, fishing and boating, Drum Corps, the Buffalo Bills, the New York Yankees and Syracuse University Football and Basketball. Chick was an active member at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fairport since 1983 and formed many lasting friendships with his fellow members. Most of all, Chick was a family man through and through.
