At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945.

KEEBLER .. ...Charles Theodor Keebler “Charlie”, 81 of South Haven, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born February 3, 1942 to Jacob and Mary Keebler in Dearborn, Michigan. Upon graduation from Fordson High School in Dearborn, he entered the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the submarine USS Spikefish (SN-404) as a machinist mate. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, Charlie joined the Michigan State Police in 1963. He served at the posts in Ypsilanti, Niles, and Sault St. Marie where he was promoted to Sergeant in 1971 and transferred to the South Haven Post where he served the remainder of his career. While in the MSP, Charlie was a member of the Underwater Recovery Team as a diver and a firearms instructor. He retired from MSP in 1987 and worked for Stanley Smith Security where he worked as a training instructor at the Cook Nuclear Facility in Bridgeman, Michigan. While serving at the Niles Post, Charlie met and married Donna Baker and they were married 30 years upon her death in 1996.
Charlie was a member of the Michigan Steelheaders where he served as president for several years. He was also a member of The Moose Lodge and American Legion. He enjoyed riding his Harley, fishing, hunting and was a certified pilot. He loved his coffee clutch, lunch dates and breakfasts with his friends. Charlie loved to travel and spend time with family, especially during the holidays.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Filbrandt Chapel. Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Filbrandt Chapel with Pastor Eric Jarvis officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow at The First Assembly of God Church, 06500 Blue Star Highway. Charlie is survived by his son; Kurt (Debbie) Keebler, daughter; Shelley Rorabeck (Alex), sister; Charlene (Pete) Genta, nephews; John (Jennifer) Genta and Mike (Katie) Genta; niece, Sarah (Scott) Chenoweth, grandchildren; Donna Hull, Conway Hull, Jennifer Forshey, Meghan (Becky) Vandervelde, great-grandchildren; Parker and Paisley Uhl, Dakota Hull and Vance and Rowan Forshey. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; Donna Keebler and his grandson; Justin Uhl.

KUPKE .. ... Karl Lee Kupke, a dedicated family man, respected community member, and proud veteran, passed away peacefully at his home in Bishop, TX on December 30, 2023. He was born on May 9, 1962, in New Iberia, Louisiana to Walter Kupke, Jr. and Joy Dugas. Karl was a graduate of Bishop High School and went on to serve his country with honor in the U.S. Navy’s nuclear submarine service. 
Karl is preceded in death by his father Walter Kupke, Jr. He is survived by his mother Joy “Mickey” Bonin, brothers Walter Kupke III (Dayna) of Monroe, LA, and Kenneth Kupke (Heidi) of San Antonio, TX, children Kristine Gossett (Darin) of Canyon Lake, TX, Sarah and Patrick Kupke of Austin, TX, and grandchild Aryanna Kupke of Canyon Lake, TX. Services to honor the memory of Karl Lee Kupke will go as follows: a visitation will be held at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, and a funeral service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bishop, TX, followed by a burial at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery in Bishop, TX. Service dates are pending.

Sanford L. Bergsten (Sandy), a loving husband, step-father, grandfather. Born on July 18, 1944, in Chicago, and passed away peacefully on January 3, 2024, in Wauconda, Illinois.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, Sandy served his country with honor aboard the USS Nathan Hale submarine. His time in the Navy instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. After his military service, he became a dedicated truck driver for F. Smith Carthage. He retired in 2002 after 18 years of safe and reliable service, during which he was a valued member of the Teamster Union 301.
A permanent camper at Blackhawk Campground in Milton, Wisconsin, Sandy loved the outdoors and was known for his love of Wisconsin fish fries and his penchant for sipping brandy old fashions. His appreciation for nature extended to his own backyard, where he found joy in feeding and watching birds.
Sandy was a devoted husband to his wife of 40 years, Normalee Bergsten, and a caring father to his stepdaughters, Stacey Lee (Joseph) Csech and Kimberly Nelson along with his grandchildren, Kayla and Alexander. Sandy was predeceased by his stepbrother, Wathier (Wally) Bergsten, Jr., and his parents, Wathier (Wally) and Tennessee Bergsten.
Sandy enjoyed his life and will be missed by family and friends.

ROMANELLO .. .. .George Anthony Romanello, 86, a 54 year resident of New Rochelle, NY, passed away on December 31, 2023, at Montefiore Einstein Hospital in New Rochelle, NY. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, on July 19, 1937, he was the son of the late Cosmo "Gus" and Sophie (Malagrino) Romanello. George was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, NY. He was VP, State Compliance & Operations, for CIT Consumer Finance in Livingston, NJ, for more than 50 years, having retired in 2001. George had honorably served in the U.S Navy from 1956 to 1959, first having briefly served in the Submarine Service as a Diving Plane Operator and subsequently as a Petty Officer and Radarman Second Class aboard the destroyer U.S.S. CAPERTON (DD 650). George was a lifelong New York Yankees and Giants fan. On August 28, 1960, in The Bronx, NY, George married Innocenta "Inez" Rosano of The Bronx, who predeceased him on March 2, 2005, after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his sons George J.; Paul and wife Michele (Bernard); Stephen and wife Cammy (Campanale); his daughter Christina and husband James (Boyle); his grandchildren Max, Chesney Ann, Sara, Grace, Samantha and James; his sister, Nancy Sculco-Mercuri and husband Osvaldo Mercuri; and brother Thomas Sculco and wife Carol (Zinc). In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of NYC or to the Franciscan Mission Associates of Mount Vernon, NY.
