At random: Nautilus has long been a popular name for a submarine. Some of the more famous of these are Robert Fulton's NAUTILUS (1800), Jules Verne's fictional Nautilus, and the NAUTILUS of Sir Hubert Wilkins in which he attempted a voyage to the North Pole under the ice (1931). There have also been three U.S. submarines of that name, including the world's first nuclear powered submarine built by the Electric Boat Division.

ELLIS .. .. ..Donald David Ellis, was a loving husband to Mary Ellis and devoted father to Lisa Brown and Grandfather to Autumn Hopkins. Born on September 15, 1934 in Logan, West Virginia. Donald was 89 when he passed on November 2, 2023 surrounded by family in Frederick, MD. 
He is joined in heaven with son David Ellis; sister Kellan Ellis; and parents Hazel and Douglas Ellis. He Went to Milton High School then West Virginia University where he was Mountaineer Mascot. Then he went on to serve 27 years in the Navy. He worshipped with his wife at Northwood Presbyterian Church. 

Dave worked on the DEW line in Aleutian Islands of Alaska for 2 years between his sophomore and junior college years. During his 27 year Naval career he assigned a board the The Shelton (USS DD 790) Which received 8 battle stars for service in the Korean war and 8 for service in Vietnam. He also served a board the USS Glenard P. Lipscomb ( SSN-685) which was a unique nuclear powered attack submarine of the U.S Navy. When Dave's tour of Duty was over, Dave enlisted the United States Naval reserves where he received his rank of captain. 
During his almost twenty-eight years of service to the Applied Physics laboratory. Donald Ellis has distinguished himself through many outstanding contributions to the laboratory's programs. 
Dave excelled as a specialist in navigation systems during his first four years at the laboratory.He developed methodology that led to improvements in the efficiency of the analysis of positioning systems installed on SLBM (submarine-launched ballistic missile) submarines. He created a test plan to evaluate automatic insertion of time-weighted heading corrections into internal navigation systems; the test results led to operational changes that significantly improved heading stability of the SLBM weapons system. 

Dave served as a laboratory representative on the staff of COMSUBLANT from 1970 to 1980, acting as a liaison between various departments within the laboratory and the submarine operating force.  Dave's outstanding performance in these assignments led, upon his return to the laboratory, to his appointment as Program Manager for the Ocean Engineering Program in 1983. In this capacity Dave has distinguished himself as an able mentor, excellent communicator, and effective manager for broad specialized technical support for the Navy sponsor.  Dave Ellis' career has had an immense impact on several Strategic Systems Department programs. 
Donald's hobbies included Bike riding, dog sledding, reading, journaling, spending time with family/friends, boating skuduo puzzles, time at his cabin, and telling stories. 


ENGLISH .. .. . English, David Clarence (1938 - 2024)
My personal and sincere goals…Do the right things for the right reasons and at the right times, with God's love, my honor and your respect. A loving husband and father, Dave English and the love of his life, Joyce were married almost 62 years and reunited on January 11, 2024. David Clarence English was 85 and a very proper gentleman. He will be remembered as very patient, loyal, faithful and kind.

In high school he was an Eagle Scout. He attended the US Naval Academy and served six years in the Navy on submarines. He then left the Navy and went to work for IBM where he had a long and successful career in marketing and management. He and Joyce were co-owners of Action Printing Center. He celebrated his strong faith at First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for more than twenty five years, served as deacon, Chairman of Deacons, and was a member of the choir.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Edna English, his wife, Joyce and granddaughter, Virginia Joyce Hill. He is survived by his daughter, Sondra Hill (Skip) of Raleigh, NC; son, Michael English (Andrea) of Buford, GA; sisters, Carole Read, and Margie (Mark) Roberts; seven grandchildren, Spencer Hill, Andrew (Ashley) Hill, Preston Hill, Brandon Hill and Catherine Hill, Alexander (Valerie) English and William English; great granddaughter, Hadley Hill and one on the way.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Staff at WhiteStone Wellness Center and AuthoraCare Hospice for their care.
