That is a lot more than we got in the 70's, but is still not enough to support a wife and kid on E-2 or E-3 pay that people are doing today.
Back in the old days, you were usually E-5 before you got married.

I know I couldn't afford to have my wife live with me while I was in, '60-64. MY E-4 salary including sub pay couldn't pay the rent.
